After Election Defeat, Labor Government Paves Way For Huge New Coal Mine

Adani is confident of getting the last state approval it needs for the construction of its Queensland coal mine, with a company chief declaring “we should be away in weeks”.

Adani won state government approval on Friday for its plan to protect the endangered black-throated finch, which lives on its central Queensland mine site.

It’s now waiting on one last approval, with the Department of Environment and Science due to decide on its groundwater management plan by June 13.

The most important remaining stronghold for the black-throated finch is in the Galilee basin, and covers land Adani and others intend to mine.

In a statement on Friday, the department said Adani had made additional promises to strengthen its finch management plan. […]

The approval of the finch management plan follows the premier’s intervention last week, after Labor’s shock defeat at the federal election.

Annastacia Palaszczuk said she was fed up with delays to state approvals, and conceded voters were too, after Labor was thumped in regions that want Adani’s jobs.

She ordered the coordinator-general to sit down with the company and officials from her environment department and agree on approval deadlines.

Adani has vowed to resume the mine’s construction as soon as its groundwater plan is approved.

10 Of 10 Coastal Antarctic Stations Show Zero Warming Over Past Decades. Failed Scientists Need To Resign

By Kirye
and Pierre Gosselin

Over the past few years, climate alarmists have increasingly been resorting to weather-ambulance chasing, which has necessitated the trotting of the globe in the search of weather anomalies to behold as proof of man-made climate change.

But one place they have been avoiding like the plague is Antarctica as a number of studies have been showing the opposite of what what predicted earlier has been happening down at the South Pole, except for possible volcanic activity beneath parts of the Antarctic ice shelf.

Analysis of Antarctic stations show cooling

Today we look at 10 Antarctic station under operation in Antarctica, scattered along the Antarctic coastline and operated by various countries:

With the 2018 data in, now is a good time to look at the long-term temperature trends of these stations. We do know that Antarctic sea ice extent has seen an impressive upward trend over the past 40 years:

Antarctic sea ice has gained steadily over the past 40 years. Chart: Comiso et al, 2017

What follows are annual mean temperature charts of each of the 10 Antarctic stations.

Butler Island and Neumayer

Both show a clear downward trend:

Halley

Halley as well shows a downward station since 1956:

Syowa and Casey

Data from the Japan operated Syowa station and the Australia Casey stations both show no trend since 1961. Here we see no signs of any warming:

So far not a single station has shown any warming.

Davis

The Davis station data go back 35 years and show a flat trend (very slight cooling in fact). No warming has been detected there since the great global warming scare began in the 1980s. So far 6 of the 6 stations plotted show no warming over the last several decades.

Zhongshan

This Antarctic station shows a definite cooling trend over the past 30 years:

Mirnyl

The Mirnyl station has been recording temperature data since 1967, i.e. more than half a century. It too is statistically flat, even showing a very slight cooling trend:

Dumont D’Urvi and Mawson

Both D’Urvi and Mawson Antarctic stations have recorded data going back to the 1950s. As the following chart tells us, there’s been no warming at these two long term stations as well.

None show warming

In summary, not single Antarctic coastal station shows warming, with most showing cooling. Now you know why the climate change ambulance chasers have been silent about this remote, vastly undisturbed continent.

South Shetland Islands

Next we look at the annual temperatures of the 5 stations of the South Shetland Islands (located in the Antarctic Ocean).

They too show no warming since 1993. Centro , Marsh has had no warming trend since 1977. Where’s the warming? There certainly isn’t any at the South Pole.

Antarctic seas cooling, new study shows

Finally a fresh comprehensive study by Zhous et al also tells us that summertime sea surface temperatures (SSTs) all around Antarctic coast have been COOLING.

This is really inconvenient news for the global warming alarmists. Just when they predicted the South Pole would warm and start a dramatic melting, the opposite has in fact happened.

Grand failure as grounds for dismissal

It’s time to dismiss these alarmists as complete failures. They should be fired permanently, and never be allowed to practice science again. Their failed predictions have led the global community on a wild policy goose chase that has cost hundreds of billions of dollars and set back progress in the developing countries by many years.

Will Climate Hysteria Cost US Democrats The Next Elections?

Despite Democrats’ cataclysmal framing of every weather event, Americans are safer than ever.
They will never surrender the wealth and safety that technology has afforded and continues to afford them.

Climate isn’t the same as weather—unless, of course, weather happens to be politically useful. In that case, weather portends climate apocalypse.

So warns Elizabeth Warren as she surveyed Iowan rainstorms, which she claims, like tornadoes and floods, are more frequent and severe. “Different parts of the country deal with different climate issues,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D–Malthusia) cautioned as she too warned of extreme tornadoes. “But ALL of these threats will be increasing in intensity as climate crisis grows and we fail to act appropriately.”

Sen. Jeff Merkley (D–Ore.) recently sent a fundraising email warning Democrats that climate change was causing “growing mega-fires, extremely destructive hurricanes, and horrific flooding” in which “American lives are at stake.”

Even if we pretend that passing a bazillion-dollar authoritarian Green New Deal would do anything to change the climate, there is no real-world evidence that today’s weather is increasingly threatening to human lives. By every quantifiable measure, in fact, we’re much safer despite the cataclysmal framing of every weather-related event.

How many of those taken in by alarmism realize that deaths from extreme weather have dropped somewhere around 99.9 percent since the 1920s? Heat and cold can still be killers, but thanks to increasingly reliable and affordable heating and cooling systems, and other luxuries of the age, the vast majority of Americans will never have to fear the climate in any genuine way.

Since 1980, death caused by all natural disasters and heat and cold is somewhere under 0.5 percent.

It’s true that 2019 has seen a spike in tornadoes, but mostly because 2018 was the first year recorded without a single violent tornado in the United States. Tornadoes killed 10 Americans in 2018, the fewest since we started keeping track of these things in 1875, only four years after the nefarious combustion engine was invented.

There has also been a long-term decline in the cost of tornado damage. In 2018, we experienced near-lows in this regard. The only better years were 2017, 2016, and 2015.

After a few devastating hurricanes around a decade ago, we were similarly warned that it was a prelude to endless storms and ecological disaster. This was followed by nine years without a single major hurricane in the United States. Or, in other words, six fewer hurricanes than we experienced in 1908 alone.

According to the U.S. Natural Hazard Statistics, in fact, 2018 saw below the 30-year average in deaths not only by tornadoes and hurricanes (way under average) but also from heat, flooding, and lighting. We did experience a slight rise in deaths due to cold.

Pointing out these sort of things usually elicits the same reaction: Why do you knuckle-dragging troglodytes hate science? Well, because science’s predictive abilities on most things, but especially climate, have been atrocious. But mostly because science is being used as a cudgel to push leftist policy prescriptions without considering economic tradeoffs, societal reality, or morality.

There are two things in this debate that we can predict with near certitude: First, that modern technology will continue to allow human beings to adapt to organic and anthropogenic changes in the environment. Second, that human beings will never surrender the wealth and safety that technology has afforded and continues to afford them.

EU GHG Emissions Rise in 2017

By Paul Homewood

Laughably they call 0.7% a “small increase”. In fact it is evident that emission cuts have really dried up in the last few years:

https://www.eea.europa.eu/publications/european-union-greenhouse-gas-inventory-2019

Although they brag that emissions have dropped by 21% since 1990, a third of this was during the 1990s, due to radical deindustrialisation in Eastern Europe, and another third after the 2008 crash.

Meanwhile, greenies are upset that only eight EU countries are committed to phasing out coal power before 2030:

 image

Environmental NGOs Climate Action Network Europe (CAN) and Sandbag criticised some EU member states for receiving EU funds intended to support the energy transition away from coal without having a clear plan to exit the climate-harmful fossil fuel. A report, which analyses the National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) of 21 EU member states that still use coal, shows that only eight of these are committed to phasing out coal by 2030. According to the NGOs, the EU has to phase out all coal by that year to meet the commitments made under the Paris Climate Agreement. “Coal-reliant member states want to have their cake and eat it with just transition funding,” said Charles Moore, energy and policy analyst at Sandbag. “The European Commission can only continue to support these member states if they come up with realistic plans for moving away from coal.”
