The excellent Guido has news of the latest claims by Labour mayoral candidate for Teesside, Jessie Jo Jacobs, that “There is no other issue bigger than [the environment]. If we think the Covid crisis hurt, the climate crisis is going to hurt much much deeper, much much wider”:
Not only is such a claim inane, insulting and crass, it is also wholly without substance.
So let’s see what has actually been going on in the region.
Heatwaves are less frequent than they used to be, as are extremely cold days. It is not getting wetter, or for that matter drier. Meanwhile rainfall is not becoming more extreme.
Finally sea levels have been rising since the 19thC at the totally unalarming rate of 1.90mm a year, and have not risen at all since the turn of the century:
According to Guido, Jessie Jo’s first act will be to “call a climate emergency for the Tees Valley”. I bet that will go down well with Teesside’s working class voters, who have unsurprisingly deserted Labour in their tens of thousands in recent years.
via NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT
