Experts tell us that Arctic sea ice is getting thinner.

The reality is much different.

Back in 2008, much of the Arctic basin had ice less than a meter thick, notably in the Beaufort, Chukchi and East Siberian Seas.

Now the same regions mostly have ice that is at least two meters thick, and some over four meters.

The only area which had substantial thick ice in 2008 was to the north of Greenland. All of this was washed out of the Arctic through the Fram strait a few months later. This led to the big drop in multi-year ice that year, which has naturally proved so difficult to replace.

Currents tend to push the ice in an anti-clockwise direction around the Arctic. This will mean that the extensive thick ice we see now will be retained within the basin this summer.
