Ideological information bubbles conquer financial incentives

From the UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT CHICAGO

A new report from social psychologists at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of Winnipeg suggests people on both sides of the political aisle are similarly motivated to dismiss monetary enticements in order to distance themselves from hearing or reading opposing ideals and information.

The research, published online by the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, details the findings from five studies involving liberals and conservatives who were presented with statements on issues such as same-sex marriage, U.S. and Canada elections, marijuana, climate change, guns and abortion.

Approximately two-thirds of respondents declined a chance to win extra money in order to avoid reading statements that didn’t support their position, say report co-authors Linda Skitka, UIC professor of psychology, and Matt Motyl, UIC assistant professor of psychology.

The UIC researchers and Jeremy A. Frimer, a corresponding author from the University of Winnipeg, indicate the divide goes beyond political topics.

Respondents also had a “greater desire to hear from like- versus unlike-minded others on questions such as preferred beverages (Coke vs. Pepsi), seasons (spring vs. autumn), airplane seats (aisle vs. window), and sports leagues (NFL vs. NBA),” they wrote.

The aversion to hearing or learning about the views of their ideological opponents is not a product of people already being or feeling knowledgeable, or attributable to election fatigue in the case of political issues, according to the researchers.

“Rather, people on both sides indicated that they anticipated that hearing from the other side would induce cognitive dissonance,” such that would require effort or cause frustration, and “undermine a sense of shared reality with the person expressing disparate views” that would harm relationships, they reported.

The researchers note the drawback of liberals and conservatives retreating to ideological information bubbles.

“What could ultimately be a contest of ideas is being replaced by two, non-interacting monopolies,” they said.

Saga of lead in Perth Children’s Hospital water supply

The ABC reports – Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH) lead contamination in water pipes supplying site – my Dec 2016 blog “Australian Government financial disasters” was discussing this issue early this month. How slow it is for truth to emerge.
The WA Building Commission has reported on the lead contamination issue with an 83 page pdf – Final report – Perth Children’s Hospital audit. Analytical results are presented in a 3 page pdf – Test results – Perth Children’s Hospital lead level patterns. The crux of the Commission findings are on page 27 of the audit section in their must read 6.4.1 Findings. High metal contents were found in the “dead leg”, a 52m dead end length of pipe open to the QEII ring main see page – see page 34 for table of analyses. The location of the “dead leg” is shown on the page 22 map – note proximity to PCH offtakes. The Commission also suspects new brass fittings in PCH as another source of lead contamination.
Page 2 of the test results shows 4 charts labelled North-South-East-West Blocks of presumably the PCH. The South Block chart in lower left shows an increasing trend of lead content. I do not recall that being addressed.

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

  • Albert Einstein

Climate skeptics tend to be like a broken record. Many think they can win the climate debate through “science.” The debate hasn’t been about science for a decade. Alarmists lost the debate ten years ago, and no longer have any interest in either debate or science.

Climate alarmism is kept alive by propaganda, censorship, intimidation, scientific fraud, data manipulation, fake statistics and enlisting useful idiots. The people behind it are not legitimate scientists, they are criminals.

Skeptics repeatedly send well meaning academics up against propagandists like Michael Mann and Bill Nye. These skeptics are great people and very knowledgable about science. But they are fighting the wrong war. This war is not about science. This is a propaganda war, and Republicans need to enlist people who understand counter propaganda – not academics. President Trump will never be able to bring down the global warming scam, until he can explain why it is a scam.

I don’t see any progress being made towards that end. None at all. This should be an easy debate to win, but skeptics need to understand who the alarmists are, who they are working for, and what the debate is really about.

Most of these pictures were taken a within 50 feet of a busy highway between Boulder and Denver. But you will never seem this magic from your car. I see it because I am riding a bicycle.
