Alan Carlin: Second edition of path-breaking research report shows the Orwellian nature of the “March for Science”

Despite Saturday’s so-called “March for Science,” the almost simultaneous release of a Second Edition of a Research Report showing the exact opposite of what some of the marchers claim to be the conclusions of climate science, has brought home the Orwellian reality that the marchers have gotten their claims concerning what the science says exactly backwards, as Alan Carlin explains.

The Climate March website says their forces of “The Resistance” won’t tolerate institutions that try to “skew, ignore, misuse or interfere with science.”

If the marchers really support science, they should be supporting climate skeptics, not the climate alarmists. How Orwellian can you get? The science is clear.

The authors of a pathbreaking August 2016 research report, discussed here, released today a Second Edition of their report. The conclusions disproving the validity of USEPA’s three lines of evidence for their 2009 Endangerment Finding for Greenhouse Gases and the lack of a statistically significant effect of increasing atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) on global and tropical temperatures remain the same.

The analysis, however, is both more elegant and easier to understand. It demonstrates that natural factors involving solar, volcanic and oceanic activity fully explain the Earth’s tropospheric and surface temperatures and that atmospheric CO2 plays no significant role.

Research Report Disproves the Alarmists’ Basic Claim

This report and the earlier edition go far beyond this by disproving the alarmists’ basic claim that increases in atmospheric CO2 result in global warming. The Research Report results can be replicated using the basic data that the authors are willing to provide, most unlike the elaborate global climate models relied on by climate alarmists. Both the First and Second Editions have been extensively peer reviewed by experts in the relevant fields.

Watch Tropical Storm Arlene ‘eaten’ by weather system

There were high hopes last week from alarmists the the first Atlantic tropical storm of 2017 – Arlene, which formed 40 days before the official start of Hurricane season on June 1st, would turn into a bonanza of “weather is getting worse due to climate change” stories. Alas, the system was so weak, it became a non-tropical storm almost as fast as it was declared one. Perhaps NHC was a bit premature in the declaration of a named storm?

From NASA Goddard: An animation created by NASA using imagery from NOAA’s GOES-East satellite shows the North Atlantic Ocean’s first tropical storm of the season being “eaten” by a large frontal system. The animation from April 19 to April 22 shows Tropical Storm Arlene in the Central Atlantic Ocean as it strengthened into a tropical storm on April 21 and weakened to a subtropical storm only to be absorbed by a frontal system later that same day. The animation combines visible and infrared satellite imagery from NOAA’s GOES-East satellite.

On Friday, April 21 at 1500 UTC (11 a.m. EDT), the National Hurricane Center issued their final bulletin on Arlene. At that time, Arlene had ceased to be a tropical cyclone although maintaining maximum sustained winds near 45 knots (52 mph/83 kph). At the time, Arlene was centered about 1,235 miles west-northwest of the Azores islands near 39.3 degrees north latitude and 49.9 degrees west longitude.

Arlene was moving southwest at 20 knots (23 mph/37 kph) when the frontal system to the west of the post-tropical storm, caught up to Arlene and absorbed it.

UK Government seeks clean air plan delay

City life in China

Maybe the courts could order the issue of free anti-pollution masks, pending any government ‘clean-up’ action.

The UK government may face legal action after seeking to delay publishing its plan to tackle air pollution until after the general election, says BBC News.

The courts had given ministers until 16:00 on Monday to set out draft measures to combat illegal levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) pollution. A 2016 court ruling said existing measures proposed by the government did not meet the requirements of law.

The general election is scheduled to take place on 8 June.

In a surprise move late on Friday, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) lodged a fresh application with the High Court to postpone publication of its draft clean air plan until after the election.

It argued the move was necessary in order to comply with election “purdah” rules limiting government announcements with political implications during the election period.

The environmental lawyers who have brought legal proceedings against the government, ClientEarth, said they were considering whether to challenge the application.

“The unacceptable last minute nature of the government’s application late on Friday night, after the court had closed, has meant that we have spent the weekend considering our response,” said chief executive James Thornton.

Another Climate Scare Debunked

Another Climate Scare Debunked

One of the many damaging effects of climate change put forward by scientists is that shrinking habitats are causing polar and grizzly bears to mate more.  This hybridisation could dilute polar bears’ DNA which will further drive down the animals’ already dwindling numbers, experts suggest. But a new study reveals that this inter-breeding is natural and is in fact not a consequence of global warming.

Pizzly, grolars or ‘cappuccino bears’ are common names of grizzly/polar hybrids.

‘Such hybrids among bears are not as rare as we have hitherto assumed,’ said study lead author Professor Dr Axel Janke of the Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Center in Frankfurt.

It had previously been assumed climate change causes grizzlies or ‘brown bears’ to invade northern regions while polar bears are pushed onto the sea ice later than usual.

The new results show however that an abundant flow of genes among different bear species occurred plenty of times in the past.

This means hybrids are not necessarily linked to climate change, they say.

‘Bears can form hybrids in different combinations,’ said Dr Janke.

Scientists sequenced the entire genomes of four bear species, making it possible to analyse the evolutionary history of all bears.

It shows that the exchange or ‘flow’ of genes between species by hybridisation is possible between most bear species – not only polar and grizzly bears.

‘With these new data of the sun bear, sloth bear, Asiatic black bear and spectacled bear, we now have the genomes of all known bear species,’ Dr Janke said.

The new genomic data show that there must have also been gene flow between the polar and sun bears in the past.

‘We knew this from zoos. In the wild, so far this was only observed for polar bears and brown bear as well as Asiatic black and sun bear,’ he said.
