Many California roads still snowbound

Crews have been digging, blowing, plowing and blasting the record-breaking snowpack for months — but many roads are still closed.
“We’re almost at the middle of June and we still have lots of passes that aren’t open,” said Florene Trainor, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Transportation.
Highway 120, the only road through Yosemite, remained closed this week as crews dig out from snows that topped 20 feet (6 meters) and snowdrifts easily more than 50 feet (15 meters) deep.

Seven feet of snow hampering Colorado marathon

As of two days ago, runners in Colorado were still clearing snow from their marathon path. In fact, there was so much snow that they could ski as of last weekend.
“Due to late season snowfall in the Rocky Mountains, the organizers of the Blueprint for Athletes Leadville Trail Marathon and Heavy Half Marathon are still shoveling out trails to prepare for race day,” says competitor.com.
The shovelers are clearing snowdrifts in some areas up to seven feet (2+ meters) high.

Pummeting June 16 Temperatures In The US

I’m flying into Detroit, where the temperature is a cool 75 degrees. But June 16 wasn’t always a cool day in the US. In 1913, temperatures were over 100 degrees in parts of Michigan, and almost the entire eastern half of the US was over 90 degrees.
June 16 used to be a hot day in the US prior to 1960, but temperatures over the last 55 years have been much cooler.
