Al Gore’s bombast and hypocrisy, an energy debacle “no one saw coming,” lessons for USA Paul Driessen The Wall Street Journal called it the energy shortage “no one saw coming.” Actually, a lot of people did see it coming. But intent on pursuing their “dangerous manmade climate change” and “renewable energy will save the planet” … Continue reading Insanity and hypocrisy Down Under

Plummeting July 16 Temperatures In The US

Plummeting July 16 Temperatures In The US

The US used to be very hot on July 16, but temperatures have plummeted. The hottest July 16 was in 1936 when afternoon temperatures averaged over 94 degrees. The only other year that happened was in 1901.

The last hot July 16 was 2006, and since then July 16 temperatures have plummeted. The coolest July 16 was in 2014, with 2015 and 2016 (NASA’s hottest year ever) also among the 20 coolest years.

On July 16, 1936 almost the entire US was over 90 degrees, with much of the central part of the country over 100F. Sections of the midwest were over 110F. This was a major cool down from earlier that week.

Now compare vs. 2016 and 2014, which were two of the coolest years.

Climate scientists lie about essentially everything, but nowhere more than their claims about heatwaves.

It is nice and cool in Maryland today.

Wind Energy’s 8 Serious Disadvantages: Hurts Everything From Wealth To Health

Wind Energy’s 8 Serious Disadvantages: Hurts Everything From Wealth To Health

via NoTricksZone

What follows is a list of reasons compiled by this German site here on why wind is a poor source of power.

There are eight disadvantages that cannot be ignored, the site writes. What follows are the eight reasons along with my own descriptions.

1. Unstable, erratic power supply

The wind doesn’t blow constantly, and so the supply is unstable and wildly fluctuating. In many locations the wind may disappear for days or even weeks at a time. Then in periods of high winds the power grid can become overloaded, or the turbines have to be shut down to avert serious mechanical damage. Overall wind turbines in Germany put out only a lousy 18% of their installed rated capacity.

2. Wind turbines are expensive

The ROI for turbines can take many years, and makes sense only in places where the wind blows often, e.g. coastal areas, offshore or hill tops. But that makes the installation far more expensive. Many investors have seen very disappointing results from wind projects. Moreover in Germany, electricity prices have skyrocketed over the past years in large part due to the mandatory feed-in of wind energy.

3. Excess power is extremely difficult to store

So far scientists and engineers are a long way from finding a solution for storing electricity. Batteries are expensive and heavy, and require massively extensive mining operations. Pump storage techniques are possible only in limited places, and they too are horribly inefficient. Converting wind-generated electricity into a gas such as hydrogen and then back into electricity when wind is calm is expensive and inefficient as well.

4. Destruction of natural habitat

As installing wind turbines in residential areas is problematic, wind parks often are located in rural or natural areas – even in the middle of forests. This entails the industrialization of natural habitats. Plants and wildlife lose their habitats, or are adversely affected. Areas are often deforested to make way for the turbines. Access roads rip though the forests, permanently damaging or even destroying the local biotope. The same is true for offshore turbines. Turbines often pose a hazard to endangered species.

5. Bird kill: death from turbine blades

If industrializing natural landscape were not bad enough, wind turbines are also a real hazard to migrating birds. Each year millions of birds are (unnaturally) killed by wind turbines worldwide. According to Nature, up to 440,000 birds are killed in the USA each year. Conventional power plants on the other hand, do not kill anywhere near as many birds. Wind turbines also kill many bats.

6. Danger from flying ice

In the wintertime, ice is known to form and build up on the blades, only later to dislodg and be thrown projectiles, posing a danger to people and property located nearby. Already near misses have been recorded.

7. Aesthetics and property values

In early times wind turbines were a fascination. But today they are much larger in size and people have grown tired of their ugliness. In North Germany, for example, it is often difficult to leave your home without having to see one. In Germany there have been literally hundreds on citizens initiatives against the construction of wind parks. People are fed up with the industrial blight in the middle of Natur that wind energy really is.

Ugly wind turbines seriously depress property values.

8. Wind turbines produce noise and infrasound

Wind turbines are not quiet. Moreover they produce infrasound: low frequency sound below the human threshold of hearing. However, infrasound is sensed by the inner ear as pressure pulses that have been scientifically found to make people ill and even damage their health.

Donald Trump took the heat, but the rest of the G20’s posturing won’t hide their rising emissions

Donald Trump took the heat, but the rest of the G20’s posturing won’t hide their rising emissions

Booker returns to last week’s G20 story:

Golly, what excitement there was over President Trump’s refusal to sign the G20 communiqué backing the “Paris Accord” on climate change.  Trump was in a minority of one against all the other 19 governments (plus the EU) which supported an agreement that the world must phase out fossil fuels. We were even told that the US now stood alone against all the other 195 countries that signed up to that non-binding Accord.

But, just as happened at the time of Paris itself, everyone completely missed the real story. Before Paris, each of the 196 participating countries, as I reported at the time (thanks to that expert analyst Paul Homewood on his Notalotofpeopleknowthat blog), was asked to submit an Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC), setting out its energy plans for the years up to 2030.

China, the world’s largest CO2 emitter, is planning to double its yearly emissions

All the major “developing” nations, led by China and India, paid lip service to the conference’s intentions, showing how they would be investing in “renewables” such as wind and solar, so long as they were generously subsidised to do so by the “developed” nations out of a Green Climate Fund worth $100 billion a year.

But they then explained how, to keep their economies growing, they planned to build huge numbers of new fossil fuel power stations, which would lead to a massive increase in their CO2 emissions.

China, the world’s largest CO2 emitter, is planning to double its yearly emissions, by an extra 10.9 billion tons. India, the third largest emitter, will treble its emissions, adding 4.9 billion tons, All the other major “developing” nations, plus Japan and Russia, are equally planning to build more coal-fired power stations. So 13 of the countries which signed that G20 communiqué last week, intend to contribute to what the INDCs show will within 13 years be a 46 percent rise in global emissions.

The only G20 countries left committed to CO2 reductions (by 1.7 billion tons) are now those in the EU, plus Canada and Australia, between them responsible for just 11.3 percent of global emissions. Most of the remaining 88.7 percent is emitted by countries which plan to increase them. Is it surprising that President Trump wanted no part in such a grotesque display of international hypocrisy?
