UK’s Green Investment Bank Abandons Britain

The newly privatised investment bank that was founded by the Government to develop renewable energy in the UK has quietly ditched this country.

A pledge to invest in Britain was scrubbed from the Green Investment Group’s (GIG) constitution on the day of its takeover by Australian investment bank Macquarie.

The Government sneaked in the change before handing control to independent trustees who would have had to vote on the matter.

It is believed the change was made in order to help the hotly opposed sale to Macquarie, which has made no secret of its plans to use the bank to invest heavily abroad.

But it has raised concerns that GIG now plans at the same time to invest less in the UK – harming the country’s efforts to embrace greener energy for which the bank was founded. GIG, however, rejects those concerns…

Before it was taken over by Macquarie, the stated ‘green objective’ of GIG, then known as the Green Investment Bank, included investing in projects that reduced greenhouse gases in the UK and protected the environment.

‘It said the board would consider investing in projects ‘likely to contribute to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the UK and globally’, but in articles of association filed at Companies House – which outlines the purpose of a firm – the UK has been removed from the wording.

How are Kiwis coping with predicted heatwave?

Last week the New Zealand MetService was pushing – New Zealand in for a warm Sunday and Monday as heatwave heads over from Australia – I have had a quick look at temperatures for a few towns around Aotearoa but do not see the predicted heatwave anywhere. Have any New Zealanders felt a heatwave on the weekend or Monday?

Bali Volcano the Latest Excuse for the Lack of Warming

Mount Agung

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

The grumbling Bali Volcano Mount Agung has not erupted yet, but experts are already talking up the dramatic short term global cooling it will cause when it blows.

Bali volcano: Here’s why the Earth will get a little cooler after Mount Agung erupts

By Alle McMahon

Something very interesting will happen when Bali’s Mount Agung finally erupts: the Earth will become a little bit cooler.

Yep. It’s not exactly what you’d expect after a volcanic eruption, which will see molten lava spewed into the air.

But don’t get too excited, it will far from reverse the effects of global warming.

Here’s why:

Global temperatures dropped last time Agung erupted

Mount Agung last erupted in 1963 after laying dormant for decades.

When it erupted, experts said global atmospheric temperatures dropped by 0.1-0.4 degrees Celsius.

That might not sound like much, but it’s quite a significant drop when you consider the last ice age occurred when global temperatures were only 5C cooler than they are now.

But the effect didn’t last for long

According to Professor Arculus, that sulphuric acid haze can persist in the stratosphere for a few years, but eventually the droplets will drop back to Earth.

“They’re small enough that they can stay up there for a while … but eventually they get rained out,” he said.

And that’s why the temperature drop will far from cure global warming.

Last time Mount Agung erupted in 1963-4 just under 2000 people died. Indonesia is taking evacuation of the region around the volcano very seriously.

Australia’s ‘Green’ Dream Turns Political Nightmare: Coalition Backbench in Revolt Against Renewables

If history offers any lessons to our political masters, it has to include those occasions when a fed up proletariat rose up and overthrew those in charge. Australia may not literally be on the brink of a civil revolt. However, there is most certainly a revolt underway in the Federal Liberal/National Coalition government. The Nationals … Continue reading Australia’s ‘Green’ Dream Turns Political Nightmare: Coalition Backbench in Revolt Against Renewables
