Record snowfall in Iowa

Up to a foot of snow for parts of the state.
______________

Fourteen Iowa counties counties remained under a winter storm warning until early Thursday, according to the Wednesday morning forecast from the National Weather Service.

Additional snow accumulations of 4 to 11 inches, including a “light glaze” of ice, were expected Wednesday for parts of north central and northeast Iowa.

Waterloo can expect between 3 and 5 inches of snow with the storm, with less than a tenth of an inch of ice, according to the NWS.

Waterloo’s previous record for April 18 is only a trace of snow, according to Alex Krull, a meteorologist with the Des Moines office of the NWS.  As of Wednesday afternoon, the city had recorded 1.5 inches of sleet, which will go down as snowfall in the record book, he said.

“It’s looking like this is going to be a record,” Krull said.

Snow totals from the storm were expected to range from 6 to 10 inches north of Highway 18, with up to a foot of snow in some areas.
