Have you ever heard of the Kobuk 440? It’s a sled-dog race touted as “The toughest race above the Arctic Circle.” This year’s race route: Kotzebue, Noorvik, Selawik, Ambler, Shungnak, Kobuk, Shungnak, Ambler, Kiana, Noorvik, Kotzebue.
In an article announcing the winner of the race, which was held Apr 12th to 15, reader Clay Olson spotted this little gem:
“This year’s trail still showed the remnants of the winter’s record snowfall and followed the meandering course of the Kobuk River from village to village, rather than the more direct overland trail that’s often used. (italics added)”
So much for snow disappearing from the Arctic.
