One of our readers is in France at the moment and came across this little campaigning stall at the market. Chatting to them, he found out they were campaigning against smart meters!
“Enedis touche pas a mon compteur” means Enedis, don’t touch my meter. (Enedis being the division of EDF who are rolling out the smart meter programme, nicknamed “Linky”.
He gathers that these girls were none too happy about the prospect of wind turbines in their beautiful countryside and solar panels occupying fields that could be growing good food.
The Stop Linky campaign has its own website here. It shares most of the concerns we have in the UK, eg:
1) Fire risk
2) Cost – estimated at Eu 10bn. Interestingly, EDF estimate the life of their smart meters at only 15 years, but US experts say that similar systems there only last 5 to 7 years on average.
3) The effect of electromagnetic waves on health and electrical equipment.
4) Privacy
5) The ability of EDF to cut supply to certain equipment
6) Hacking
Good on the French! While we in this country just sit back and accept the darned things, they get out on the street and do something about it.
via NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT
