Krakatau is a volcanic island located in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra in Indonesia. In 1883 the cataclysmic eruption of the “original” (and much larger) Krakatau killed more than 30,000 people.

In 1927, a new island, Anak Krakatau, emerged from the 1883 caldera. The new island was formed by an underwater eruption.
