Calgary – Most snow this early in the season in 61 years

Parts of the city reported up to 40 cm (16 inches) in a 12-hour period. A snowfall warning remains in effect. Wettest Oct 2 on record.

The City of Calgary has activated its municipal emergency plan and called in reinforcements from neighboring cities in response to a massive October snowfall.

Edmonton, Red Deer, Medicine Hat and Okotoks offered to send equipment and operators to assist with snow-removal efforts.

Unseasonably harsh dose of winter (in early fall)

“We’re dealing with an unseasonably harsh dose of winter very early in our season. The fact that winter has arrived earlier than we typically get, with much more snowfall than we typically get, there are preparations and resources that we normally have on standby that have been activated,” said Chief Tom Sampson of the Calgary Emergency Operations Centre.

“We haven’t had this much snow since 1914 and 1957, almost 60 years ago,” said Sampson,

The early blizzard caused headaches for commuters. Calgary police reported 95 accidents overnight, including seven involving injuries.

Wettest October 2 on record

According to Environment Canada data, the storm has given Calgary its snowiest autumn day since Oct. 21, 1957 and its single wettest Oct. 2 since the governmental department began keeping records in 1884.
