Whiteouts from Colorado to Michigan may shut down travel

Forecasts call for 12, 18, even 24 inches (30, 45, even 60cm) of snow for portions of Nebraska, North and South Dakota and Minnesota before the end of week.

Possible blizzard conditions at times from the central High Plains to much of the northern Plains and areas surrounding Lake Superior.

Whiteouts expected along portions of I-25, I-29, I-70, I-80, I-90 and I-94, as well as U.S. Routes 10, 14, 20, 71, 81 and 83.

Extensive blowing and drifting snow.

Drifts up to 6 feet deep (2m) – or more! – in open areas.

Road closures likely.

Some regional airports may be forced to shut down for a time.

Motorists face the risk of becoming stranded for extended periods.
