Illinois is “about as dangerously cold as it can be,” the National Weather Service announced. Wind chills as low as 56F below zero.
Daily low temperature records fell in Chicago, Rockford, Peoria, Bloomington-Normal, and Champaign-Urbana.
The temperature Wednesday dropped to minus 26F in Rochelle, about 25 miles south of Rockford.
Weather service meteorologist Todd Kluber Chicago said Rockford’s all-time low temperature record of minus 27F could fall tonight.
Illinois schools, museums, courts and other facilities across the state closed Wednesday after Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker issued a disaster proclamation.
