The spate of tornadoes, which struck the US towards the end of May, has now thankfully subsided, with weather conditions settling down.

Provisional numbers suggest tornado activity has so far been well above average this season, but well below 2008 and 2011.

A glance at the temperature anomalies from NOAA for May show exactly why tornado activity has been so strong, with extremely cold weather to the north and west:

Last year, things were completely different, with total numbers of EF-1s and EF-3s both the lowest on record.

Notably there were no EF-4s and 5s at all, the first time this has happened since the start of records in 1970.
