Intense snowfall headed for the Alps

More than 5 feet (150 cm) possible by Sunday morning.

Related to the extreme rainfall event across the SE France and western Alps this weekend, intense snowfall will be ongoing over the higher mountains across NW Italy (W Alps). Models are hinting up to or more than 150 cm (5 ft) of fresh snow by Sunday morning, so an extreme amount of snow in just 36 hours.

Deep trough sitting over SW Europe will support persisting strong southerlies towards the Alps, advecting huge amounts of moisture into the mountains. As cold temperatures will be present roughly above 2000 m ASL, intense snowfall will occur.

SIGNIFICANT & HIGH risks are active for parts of SE France into NW Italy with a threat for intense and excessive rainfall this weekend – 200-400 mm of rainfall with dangerous flash floods and landslide threat likely!
