The most rainfall since record-keeping began in 1945, perhaps a lot longer. But the headline merely says it’s the most rain this decade. I wonder why they downplayed it?
_______
The 2 inches of rain that had fallen in the Seattle area by around 9 a.m. had broken rainfall records by the time some people got to work yesterday morning. It was the most rain on Dec. 20 since record-keeping began in 1945 at Sea-Tac Airport, beating the 1.93 inches that fell in 1955. By 8 p.m. last night, the total had risen to 3.08 inches, making it the fifth wettest Sea-Tac day ever recorded. Not just for the date, mind you, but for any day.
Combined with Thursday’s rainfall, which also broke records, the area received more than 4 inches of rain, according to the weather service.
Forecasters predicted that some areas, primarily south of Seattle, could see as much as 8 inches total by Saturday.
It’s all because of an atmospheric river, a deep plume of warm moisture coming off the Pacific from the southwest, said weather service meteorologist Kirby Cook.
