Many parts of Mongolia suffering dzuds

A dzud is a Mongolian term for a severe winter in which large numbers of livestock die, primarily due to starvation being unable to graze, in other cases directly from the cold.

There are various kinds of dzud, including white dzud, which is an extremely snowy winter in which livestock are unable to find nourishing foodstuff through the snow cover and starve.

Mongolia – 23 Jan 2020 –  According to a report from the National Emergency Management Agency, 23 soums (territories?) of six provinces are suffering harsh winter situations—white dzud disaster, whilst 46 soums of 13 provinces are under dzud-like conditions.

Wintering situations in some soums of Uvurkhangai, Arkhangai, Khovd, Gobi-Altai, Zavkhan, Dundgobi, Bulgan, Sukhbaatar and Khentii aimags are reportedly worsening or risky to suffer dzud. For instance, most territories or 12 soums of Zavkhan province are blanketed in snow, suffering white dzud.

The province’s administration is taking required measures to distribute hay to herders’ settlements and clean thick snow for livestock grazing.
