“Ultra-rare snowfall carpets Baghdad … Iraqis young and old said it was the first time they had ever seen snow falling in Baghdad.”
The last recorded snowfall in the city was in 2008, but it was quick and mostly slushy. Prior to that, it had been a century since Baghdad saw any flakes.
Snow also carpeted the Shiite holy city of Karbala south of Baghdad and the city of Mosul in northern Iraq.
Annual snowfall is common in the mountainous northern region of Iraq, but very rare in Baghdad.
By midday, the snow had melted in most parts of the city.
