From GWPF:
The leader of the Parliamentary Party Markus Pieper told news magazine FOCUS:
The Green Deal was a gigantic challenge for an economy in top shape. After the corona bloodletting, it is simply not financially viable.”
Pieper suggests, among other things, to expand trading in CO2 to electric cars and building renovations instead of fixed CO2 quotas. “Then the market regulates the progress in climate protection according to supply and demand via a price mechanism,” Pieper told FOCUS.
Pieper also called for energy policy to be the “core concern of EU foreign policy” in order to import more electricity from renewable energy from Africa and the Middle East. The Federal Government also warned that the current carbon price of ten euros per tonne of CO2 should be maintained and the decision by the Federal Council on a higher carbon price should be rejected.
One by one, the wheels are falling off the wagon. The only trouble is that Pieper’s suggestions are just as muddled as Merkel’s policies, and just as damaging.
His main idea is to expand the use of carbon taxes, for instance to encourage buying electric cars and installing insulation or low carbon heat systems.
But we already subsidise EVs in the UK, in addition to taxing petrol and diesel. But that has done little to encourage us to switch over, because EVs are so useless. Simply increasing taxes on conventional cars just makes us all poorer.
As for building renovations, the same applies. Increasing tax on existing heating systems and fuel may eventually make us buy expensive alternative systems, but we will still be much worse off either way.
As for the idea that Europe should import more electricity from Africa and the Middle East, I can only assume Herr Pieper is off his trolley!
It is one thing importing oil and gas from that region, as there are always alternative sources. But for the EU economy to be so dependent on the whims of African and Middle East governments, not to mention terrorist groups, would invite disaster.
