Why doesn’t the media report more often on the proven successful use of the steroid dexamethasone in fighting Covid-19?
To prolong the panic, perhaps?
_______
Low-dose steroid treatment dexamethasone could be a major breakthrough (emphasis added) in the battle against the coronavirus, according to health experts in the United Kingdom. They say the drug could cut the risk of death by a third for patients on ventilators and a fifth for those requiring oxygen.
Did you catch that? Cut the death risk by a third!
The BBC reported that had the drug had been used to treat patients in the UK from the start of the pandemic, up to 5,000 lives could have been saved.
About 19 out of 20 patients with coronavirus recover without being admitted to a hospital. Most of those who are admitted recover, but some need oxygen or mechanical ventilation. These are the high-risk patients whom dexamethasone appears to help.
Looked at another way, this means that a full 95 percent of patients with coronavirus recover without hospitalization, and of the 5 percent who are hospitalized, most recover. Of the remaining few who are placed on ventilators, dexamethasone cuts their death rate by a third.
“(Dexamethasone) will save lives, and it will do so at a remarkably low cost,” said Martin Landray, an Oxford University professor who is co-leading the trial.
His co-lead investigator, Peter Horby, said dexamethasone – a generic steroid widely used in other diseases to reduce inflammation – is “the only drug that’s so far shown to reduce mortality – and it reduces it significantly.” Reduces mortality significantly!
This is fantastic news! It should be headlined every day! But no. Since the first major breakthrough was announced, nary a mention.
