There seems to be some confusion about my post on Boris’ speech today about wind power etc.
The point I was trying to make is that there is effectively nothing he said that we did not already know.
The Tory manifesto already pledged 40 GW of offshore. And as I pointed out, Labour’s was far more extreme. The pledge is also in line with that demanded by Gummer.
Equally, we already knew about electric cars and heat pumps etc.
Press headlines that our homes would all be powered by wind were purely fictional. The claims were simply based on the fact that wind power could on average supply a third of demand.
None of this changes the fundamental issues of intermittent generation, grid stability, cost etc. But we already knew that anyway.
The bottom line is that Boris’ speech is no more than a restatement of last year’s policies.
