There’s been much ado about the UK heatwave last month. Much ado about nothing as it turns out.
The month ended up as only the 21st hottest since 1878. It was not even as hot as years like 1911 and 1921:

Daily temperatures in Central England never even exceeded 30C.
It is instructive to compare daily temperatures with those of a hundred years ago:

Clearly the heatwave was much longer lasting and intense in 1921, and that July ended up being a full two degrees hotter.
But back then the Met Office did not have a thermometer next to the runway at Heathrow with which to con the public.
