Silly, little Rachel Millard has written this puff piece for Octopus Energy, which includes this pile of BS :
This really should have been labelled as an advertisement, in which case it would have been banned by the ASA.
It is generally accepted that heat pumps need to be run all day to keep heat up to a reasonable level, so the idea that you just turn them on at night is absurd. If you do, your house would be stone cold all day.
But does their Agile Tariff even save money even then? Not according to their Octopus’ own data:
https://agileprices.co.uk/?fromdate=20220131
It would seem that, during winter at least, nearly all of the day and night are charged at well over 25p/KWh. The daily average is about 33p, and even the offpeak is over 32p.
Given that the price cap has been set at 20p/KWh, I would say customers are being ripped off. Even the new price cap in April will only be 28p.
Although rates in summer, when of course you will not need your heat pump, are lower, they are still higher than the price cap:
There is of course one other factor that anyone thinking of signing up should consider. With the wildly volatile peak pricing around at the moment, you could very well find yourself unwittingly paying astronomical rates during the day.
I have read about cases in Texas, where customers had signed up to rates which tracked wholesale prices. Last winter, when wind power collapsed during snow storms, these poor guys found themselves with bills running into the thousands.
I am not suggesting that would happen here, but it is not difficult to see people getting nasty shocks when they open their bills at the end of the month.
It is utterly shameful that Rachel Millard has allowed herself to be persuaded to regurgitate these fraudulent claims by Octopus Energy.
