UAE puts oil company boss in charge of Cop28 climate talks

Abu Dhabi National Oil Company or ADNOC is the state-owned oil company of the United Arab Emirates

Sounds like a sensible chap, on energy matters, but some ‘campaigners’ are already frothing. Pointing out that oil and gas demand is continuing to rise isn’t a crime, it’s just reality.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) government has appointed Sultan Al-Jaber to be the president of the Cop28 climate talks in November, reports Climate Home News.

Al Jaber heads the state-owned Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc), the twelfth largest oil company in the world, and the emirates’ much smaller renewable energy firm Masdar.

He has been a key figure in national climate and energy policy for over a decade. While Al Jaber has promoted renewable energy, in November 2021 he called for increased global investment in oil and gas.

“The oil and gas industry will have to invest over $600bn every year until 2030 just to keep up with the expected demand,” he told an Abu Dhabi oil conference.

“Renewable energy is the fastest growing segment of the energy mix but oil and gas is still the biggest and will be for decades to come. The future is clean but it is not here yet. We must make progress with pragmatism,” he said.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) said in 2021 that, if the world is to limit global warming to 1.5C then there should be no investment in new fossil fuels. They calculated that the supply of oil should drop by three-quarters between 2020 and 2050.

In October 2022, the IEA projected that even under existing policies, global fossil fuel demand would peak and decline steadily from the mid‐2020s.

Mixed reception

Reaction to Al Jaber’s appointment was mixed. The head of the Climate Action Network campaign group, Tasneem Essop, said it was a conflict of interest to lead climate talks at the same time as heading an oil company.

Coal power facility to stay open for extra two years in blow to net zero

By Paul Homewood

One of Britain’s last coal-burning power facilities is to be kept open for two years longer than planned as the energy crisis deals a blow to the green agenda.

The German energy giant Uniper is poised to keep the unit, at its Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station in Nottinghamshire, open until 2024 after an appeal from ministers – after initially intending to shut it in 2022.

National Grid on Wednesday also left the door open for extending the life of other coal-fired plants.

The moves risk hurting Britain’s ambitions to cut carbon dioxide emissions little more than a year after it hosted the COP26 climate conference, and highlights strains on the energy system following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

It is one of four units at its station in Ratcliffe-on-Soar, Nottingham. The other three were always planned to remain open until September 2024.

Which all begs the question, what will happen in September 2024, when the whole lot shuts down?

US Climate Is Getting Less Extreme, Not More

By Paul Homewood

I covered this story the other day, and inevitably it is making headlines across the media (as it was intended to):

https://notalotofpeopleknowthat.wordpress.com/2023/01/10/climate-change-makes-heat-waves-storms-and-droughts-worse-say-weather-attribution-models/

The claim is not based on any actual data, but on weather attribution models.

But what does the actual data tell us?

Much of the world lacks long term, high quality data. But one country that does have it in abundance is the US, and it tells us a completely different story to the one presented in the latest report.

Heatwaves, for instance, used to be much worse than now, and not only during the dustbowl years of the 1930s. Climate fraudsters love to begin their trends from the 1960s, when the world was cooling. But as the graph below shows, there is nothing out of the ordinary about recent heatwaves:

Figure 3

Then we can turn to drought. The record exhibits large swings, but plainly droughts are not getting worse – on the contrary, the 1920s, 30s and 50s were much worse than now:

Floods? I’m afraid not. The data provided by the EPA is the inevitable mixed bag; after all nature does not do straight lines. Some places, such as the North East show a worsening trend, whilst others have been decreasing. Such regional changes may well be associated with oceanic cyclical changes, such as the AMO and PDO, which are known to affect US rainfall patterns. But if the weather attribution models are right, we would expect to see worsening flood trends everywhere.

And storms?

There are no trends in the frequency of hurricanes or major ones:

And violent tornadoes are much less frequent now:

The US is of course only one country, albeit a large one. And maybe other parts of the world are experiencing more extreme weather. But if the weather attribution models are right, all of the world, including the US, should be seeing the same effects.

The fact that the US, and for that matter the UK, is not seeing such effects fundamentally undermines their credibility.
