The Left thinks offshore wind costs are benefits

New Jersey is arguably the leader in stupidity here, although there are several serious contenders, so let’s take them as a quick example.

Weather Conspires: Wind Industry Battered By Persistent & Pernicious ‘Wind Droughts’

To call Australia’s wind power output “pathetic” is to flatter it. Turbines with a total capacity of 10,277 MW are spread from Far North Queensland, across New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia – and all connected to the Eastern Grid.

On rare occasions, the combined output reaches around 60% of their total notional capacity, and then, only briefly.

On plenty of occasions, the output barely rises above 6%. And 5,000 to 6,000 MW collapses occur with banal regularity.

For example, on 4 May 2023, combined output reached 6,341 MW, before plummeting 5,901 MW to a piddling 440 MW.

When a single 500 MW generating unit at a coal-fired power plant breaks down, the renewables cult and MSM hacks rant and rave about the ‘unreliability of coal’.

But the same clowns switch to a practiced form of deliberate ignorance, when they omit to mention wind power output collapses 10 times that magnitude, that occur over the space of a few hours, and often. Of course, telling that truthful tale simply doesn’t fit the narrative.

We’ll hand over to the team from Jo Nova for more detail on yet another occasion when Australia’s wind power fleet performed in perfect accord with the weather.

Six gigawatts of total wind generation collapsed in 16 hours last week, and nobody cared

Just another day of Wind turbine failure — 6GW in 16 hours
There was no cyclone, no storm, no national disaster, but our national infrastructure collapsed just the same. Blame a high pressure cell.

Last week TonyFromOz noticed that the output from all 79 industrial wind plants in Australia disappeared overnight from 6GW to just 0.4GW.  Imagine if an entire state of coal plants failed in the space of 16 hours and nobody cared?

Wind plants fail all the time and wreak havoc on the grid. It’s just “business as usual” or rather “subsidies as usual”. The rainbow list of acronyms below the graph shows every single wind plant in five states of Australia was accounted for in this dismal tally.

Billions of dollars rests on whether we can stop high pressure cells forming near Adelaide…
The more wind towers we build, the worse this mayhem will be. Weather comes and weather goes but when the doldrums hit, it wipes out all 79 industrial plants together. Only wind plants built outside the high pressure cell could smooth out this failure. Offshore wind farms would have failed at the same time as onshore ones too unless they were built halfway to New Zealand. To put that task in perspective, most offshore windfarms in the UK are built within 40km of the coast, but New Zealand is 4,000 kilometers away.  Even floating windplants are built in 120m of water, but the Tasman Sea is 5,000 m deep.

Normal weather causes wind turbine weather mayhem on the NEM

The whole grid in the Australian NEM (National Energy Market) is roughly a 22GW enterprise, so more than a quarter of the total generation came and went — another quarter had to sit by and twiddle its thumbs waiting to quietly take over. No wonder Australian electricity is so expensive now. We pay unreliable generators to produce sacred green electrons and then pay another set of reliable generators to sit around and wait for when they will be needed. Who thought this would be cheaper — communists, maybe.

Indeed, if we include solar power variation, it’s even worse.

Australian Unreliable Renewables fell from 62% to 4% of national energy generation in 18 hours
Total renewable energy generation from all forms of solar and wind reached a peak at lunchtime Weds 3rd of May of 16.7 GW of generation. By 6am the next day that had fallen to 0.9GW. In a total system with an average of about 22GW of generation nearly 16 gigawatts was lost in 18 hours. Roughly 60% of total national generation failed and the system coped, but backing up this grid to cater for this huge failure comes at a massive cost.

That’s 95% of peak renewables output lost in less than a day.

This is like a whole state fleet of coal plants failing at once.

Imagine one of our largest states lost their entire coal fleet overnight?

For some perspective, ALL of the coal fired power in Victoria have a Nameplate of 4960MW, for three power plants with 10 Units, and that’s lower than the loss of power from ALL of these wind plants. If something like that failed (all 10 Units of the coal fired power in that State of Victoria) the State would be totally blacked out.

The same would apply for the State of New South Wales, where the total Nameplate for all of its coal fired plants is now 6149MW from four power plants with 12 Units (and that total is now lower since the recent closure of the Liddell plant, removing 2000MW for that coal fired total Nameplate for that State), and if all those 12 Units shut down, then that State would also be blacked out.

These are the two most populous States in Australia, and if something like that happened, it would be quite literally catastrophic, and it would be screamed about in the media (when the power did come back on) about the absolute and stupendous unreliability of coal fired power.

Luckily, in this case, with wind generation, there were many natural gas fired plants, and hydro power plants to take up the slack of such an immense loss of power, and because of that, and the fact that this is renewable power, now the sacred cow of the media, no one even knew, and it was not reported, huh, not that anyone even knew of this correlation in the first place.

The media silence on this is a lie by omission, but it’s still a lie, still dishonest, and we need to start protesting outside the ABC and SBS headquarters to draw attention to this deliberate deceit to hide the failures of their sacred totem and co-dependent industries. Those who depend on the government lie for each other all the time. It’s no accident.

Dear Federal Government: Transparency on Wind and Whales, Please

“For the foregoing reasons, we respectfully make the following two requests: First that NOAA/Fisheries reopen the public comment period on the CVOW request for an LOA. Second, that NOAA/Fisheries neither consider nor approve the LOA until after the entire NEPA process is concluded and a ROD is issued for the project. Should NOAA/Fisheries deny either of our requests, we will initiate legal action.”

There is an old joke: “When is an environmentalist not an environmentalist?” Answer: “When it comes to Industrial Wind Turbines.” …

I was reminded of this upon reading a respectful, firm letter from the legal council representing free-market organizations to Jolie Harrison, Chief Permits and Conservation Division, Office of Protected Resources, National Marine Fisheries Service. The matter is in regard to Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind Commercial Project – Dominion Application for Letter of Authorization to Take Small Numbers of Marine Mammals, the latest salvo being

a request from the Virginia Electric and Power Company, doing business as Dominion Energy Virginia (Dominion Energy), for Incidental Take Regulations (ITR) and an associated Letter of Authorization (LOA) pursuant to the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) [for] … authorization of take, by Level A harassment and Level B harassment, of small numbers of marine mammals over the course of 5 years (2024–2029) incidental to construction of the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind Commercial (CVOW–C) project offshore of Virginia … and associated Export Cable Routes. Project activities likely to result in incidental take include pile driving activities (impact and vibratory) and site assessment surveys using high-resolution geophysical (HRG) equipment.

The April 29th letter from free-market counsel urging transparency of the eco-issues concerning a major wind power development follows:

This firm represents the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow (CFACT), the American Coalition for Ocean Protection (ACOP), and The Heartland Institute (Heartland)[1] on matters relating to federal and state permitting for the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project. All three organizations – CFACT, ACOP, and Heartland – oppose the CVOW project on grounds that it will adversely affect the human and natural environment; pose unacceptable threats to federally-listed endangered species and federally-protected marine mammals; cause environmental damage reaching across the globe; and result in significant and long-lasting impacts on already at-risk populations in the United States and abroad.

On September 15, 2022, the developer of the CVOW project, Dominion Energy (Dominion), applied to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NFMS) for Rulemaking and a Letter of Authorization (collectively, “LOA”) to take small numbers of marine mammals incidental to construction of the CVOW project. Among the marine mammals identified in Dominion’s take request is the federally-listed and highly-endangered North Atlantic right whale, whose population has declined to approximately 330 individuals.

Unlike Dominion’s prior Incidental Harassment Authorization, which only covered take incidental to site characterization surveys, the requested LOA would cover take caused by construction of the CVOW project itself. Given that the CVOW project has not yet been approved, it is premature for NOAA and NMFS to process Dominion’s LOA request. Doing so would prejudice the NEPA process that is still ongoing. It would also signal that the federal government has already decided to approve the CVOW project, without change and in the absence of a Record of Decision (ROD). In short, any steps taken by NOAA and/or NMFS to process the LOA in advance of the ROD would prejudge and taint the entire project-review process.

The LOA is premature for another reason as well. In October 2022, NOAA and NMFS, along with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), issued a draft strategy for addressing the impacts of offshore wind development on North Atlantic right whales.[2] That strategy describes how mammal experts, including experts at NOAA/Fisheries, are increasingly concerned that the offshore wind energy projects proposed along the eastern seaboard will cause further loss of North Atlantic right whales, impeding the species’ recovery, and driving it toward extinction.

The strategy document also indicated that the risks posed to right whales by offshore wind projects are not fully understood and require more study. In recent months, whale deaths and strandings have spiked, and there is growing alarm that the construction and operation of offshore wind projects will make a bad situation worse.

Unfortunately, NOAA/Fisheries closed the public comment period on Dominion’s LOA application on October 17, 2022. This means that much of the recent information about the impacts of offshore wind development on the right whale and other marine mammals was unavailable to the public during the comment period. Given that Dominion has asked that the LOA not take effect until March 4, 2024, there is little to be lost by reopening the public comment period so that interested citizens can submit new data on the whale impact issues that have recently come to light.

For the foregoing reasons, we respectfully make the following two requests:

  • First, that NOAA/Fisheries reopen the public comment period on the CVOW request for an LOA.
  • Second, that NOAA/Fisheries neither consider nor approve the LOA until after the entire NEPA process is concluded and a ROD is issued for the project.

Should NOAA/Fisheries deny either of our requests, we will initiate legal action.

Thank you for your consideration.

Extinction Rebellion Radicals Claim Responsibility for a Stage Invasion

Essay by Eric Worrall

Jacob Rees Mogg – free to hold “his national loonies convention next week and see how many people show up”.

Watch: Extinction Rebellion Activist Storms Stage at National Conservatism Conference

KURT ZINDULKA15 May 2023

A leftist agitator allegedly acting on behalf of the climate alarmist Extinction Rebellion activist group stormed the stage of the National Conservatism Conference in London on Monday during the keynote speech from former cabinet minister Jacob Rees-Mogg.

During an address from former Business Secretary Jacob Rees-Mogg at the Emmanuel Centre in Westminster, a man climbed up on the stage in order to disrupt the NatCon Conference on Monday.

Grabbing the microphone from Rees-Mogg, the leftist told the crowd: “Ladies and gentlemen, you’re very nice people and I’m sure you are fantastic. I’d like to draw your attention to a few characteristics of fascism.”

Read more: https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2023/05/15/watch-extinction-rebellion-activist-storms-stage-at-national-conservatism-conference/

A green radical seizing a microphone podium from a speaker by force, shoving the speaker bodily out of the way, then denouncing the speaker as a fascist, has a certain irony. Reminds me of descriptions of other speakers in another time, who got manhandled by fanatics who invaded their meetings. But self awareness has never been an Extinction Rebellion strength.

Entertaining as he is, Rees Mogg is a long way from being my favourite conservative. In 2022 Rees Mogg wrote a piece for The Guardian, urging people to get on board Net Zero. At the time Rees Mogg’s mum was reportedly trying to get approval for a large wind farm, though I don’t recall Rees Mogg publicly stating his views on his mum’s wind project.

The silliest part of this protest is, Rees Mogg probably would have been happy to accommodate the Extinction Rebellion gentleman in a staged debate if he had asked nicely, and might have even agreed with some of his points, given Rees Mogg’s support for green energy.

But Extinction Rebellion have had a few bad experiences with Rees Mogg. Back in March this year, Rees Mogg reduced Extinction Rebellion’s Phoebe Plummer to incoherent spluttering in a televised debate. Phoebe is one of those Extinction Rebellion radicals who goes around trying to deface priceless artworks, to force people to listen to her point of view.

Whatever my reservations about Rees Mogg’s claim to be a small government conservative who supports big green, I can’t fault Rees Mogg’s handling of this latest Extinction Rebellion outburst.
