Just Stop Oil has claimed climate change will lead to Southport-style riots in the future after police arrested four of its members who were on their way to protest at Manchester Airport.
Greater Manchester Police said it had detained three women aged 21, 30 and 53 and a man aged 23, on Monday morning, on suspicion of conspiring to cause a public nuisance.
In response to the arrests, a spokesman for Just Stop Oil said the violent riots currently taking place across the UK “are a foretaste” of what would happen if the group’s demands are not met.
Just Stop Oil is calling on the Government to establish a “fossil fuel treaty” banning all use of oil.
It vowed in July to use “all means necessary” to disrupt families’ summer holidays to draw attention to its demands.
A spokesman said on Monday: “The rioting and racist attacks that have occurred over the weekend are a foretaste of what will come as climate breakdown progresses and puts unbearable pressures on society. The root causes of these riots are clear.
“Austerity; manipulative far-right agitators in the streets, the media, and in Parliament; and the liberals that fail to challenge their agenda. Imagine when food scarcity, home-destroying floods, and global collapse are mixed in?”

These clowns really do live in their own little world.
There won’t be riots because of a bit of hot weather. But there certainly will be when people can’t afford to heat their homes, there are blackouts in winter and there are mass famines thanks to the taking away of mechanisation and fertilsers for farming.
