Teddington Bushy Park DCNN5100 – What a difference a few sky scrapers or airports make.

Bushy Park comes under the London borough of Richmond and is the second largest Royal Park in London at over 445 hectares/1,100 acres. Situated between Hampton Hill and Hampton Wick this is a green oasis in the concrete jungle of metropolitan London. This eases the London urban heat island effect and brings temperatures nearer to the natural environment.

Google Street View imagery just manages to show the screen in a relatively open green expanse with the National Physical Laboratory Sports Fields to one side and Teddington Cricket club to the other. This is not a perfect spot by any means but is likely to be better than many of the eleven sites in the tiny west sector of greater London.

More to the point though is that Teddington highlights the UHI differences within the M25. As I highlighted in the special topic on UHI there are frequently huge differences in temperatures in London. The image below is from weatherobs at 19:30 3/3/2025.

Whilst the skyscraper surrounded Battersea Heliport site is a balmy 11°C, Teddington along with Kew is only registering 4°C. Heathrow again manages to demonstrate a totally unnatural 9°C being 6°C higher than Chertsey and Iver Water Works at just 3°C. RAF Northolt at 6°C sustains the unnatural airfield bias.

All the above demonstrates just how difficult it is to derive any meaningful temperature representation of the wider area from such a large conurbation as London. Teddington is probably the least worst of a bad bunch.
