Heatwaves and Excess Deaths–The Facts

From NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT

By Paul Homewood

Further to the Guardian’s absurd claim that “last week’s heatwave killed 600 people”, it is worth going back to the ONS analysis carried out after the 2022 heatwaves:

https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/articles/excessmortalityduringheatperiods/englandandwales1juneto31august2022

In short, deaths spiked during the hot days, but quickly fell back below average. Over the period as a whole, the number of deaths was no higher than  normal.

People may have died a few days earlier than they would otherwise. But the heat did not kill them at all – they were dying anyway, and the heat was no more than a trigger, just as a bit of cold or wet weather could have been.

Because the ONS study was carried out before all summer deaths had been registered, they included this table:

Although the number of deaths in 2022 appears to be slightly higher than usual, what is noticeable is that the hot summer of 2018 recorded one of the lowest totals of the decade. In contrast, 2016, a much cooler summer, recorded the highest number of deaths until 2021.

Clearly then, there is no correlation between heat and increased deaths.

We need, of course, to be wary of comparing post pandemic death rates with those before – we do know that there were large numbers of excess deaths throughout 2022, for reasons never explained.

Cambridge Rainfall Trends

By Paul Homewood

 image

I looked at this EA report the other day. As you may recall, the stats show that English summers are not getting drier.

However, it is worth seeing if there are any regional variations.

East Anglia is the driest part of the country, so what is going on there?

ECA&D offer a summary of the summer-half year, which is much more relevant and appropriate than a nominal June to August period.

Just as the England graph, there is no long term trend and the most recent drought in 2022 was not unprecedented. The driest summer-half was in 1921.

While we’re at it, we can look at the other rainfall graphs for Cambridge.

I see nothing alarming in any of these charts:

Global Warming Caused By Reduce Cloud Cover

By Paul Homewood

Another study suggests that most of recent global warming is due to reduced cloud cover, not GHGs:

 image

Abstract

Recent Earth energy budget observations show an increase in the sunlight absorbed by the Earth of 0.45 W/m2 per decade, caused primarily by a decrease in cloud reflection. Here we decompose the solar radiative budget trends into general circulation and cloud controlling process components. Regimes representing the midlatitude and tropical storm zones are defined, and the trends in the areal coverage of those regimes which are potentially induced by circulation changes are separated from trends in the cloud radiative effect within each regime which are potentially induced by changes in local cloud controlling processes. The regime area change component, which manifests itself as a contraction of the midlatitude and tropical storm regimes, constitutes the largest contribution to the solar absorption trend, causing decreased sunlight reflection of 0.37 W/m2 per decade. This result provides a crucial missing piece in the puzzle of the 21st century increase of the Earth’s solar absorption.

Key Points

  • Satellite observations show that in the past 24 years the worlds storm cloud zones have been contracting at a rate of 1.5%–3% per decade

  • This contraction allows more solar radiation to reach the Earth’s surface and constitutes the largest contribution to the observed 21st century trend of increased solar absorption

Plain Language Summary

Analysis of satellite observations shows that in the past 24 years the Earth’s storm cloud zones in the tropics and the middle latitudes have been contracting at a rate of 1.5%–3% per decade. This cloud contraction, along with cloud cover decreases at low latitudes, allows more solar radiation to reach the Earth’s surface. When the contribution of all cloud changes is calculated, the storm cloud contraction is found to be the main contributor to the observed increase of the Earth’s solar absorption during the 21st century.

Naturally the authors go on to blame the reduced cloud cover on global warming, putting the cart before the horse! Without reduced cloud cover, there would have been little or no warming!

They offer no evidence to support that assertion.

What this does mean though is that if warming is due to less clouds and not GHGs, all of the models predicting more warming based on rising CO2 are invalidated.

Clearly climate science should now drop their obsession with CO2, and instead start focussing on what is going on in the sky.

Heartland UK/Europe: More Progress! (DeSmog confirms again)

“For the Heartland Institute and its supporters, DeSmog’s reporting serves as a ringing endorsement of their effectiveness. Even in the UK, the exaggerated arguments for the green scam are being revealed.”

MasterResource has posted on the success of the Chicago-based Heartland Institute in the UK/EU fight for energy/climate realism and social justice. DeSmog just provided an update that should be very encouraging to Heartland and its supporters.

In “Nigel Farage to Headline Tufton Street Climate Denial Event” (June 18, 2025), authors Adam Barnett and Sam Bright report:

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage is set to speak at an event today organised by a pro-Trump think tank and held in the home of the UK’s main climate science denial group.

Farage, whose party campaigns to scrap the UK’s goal of achieving net zero emissions, is the star speaker at the event, described as a “ground-breaking conversation about climate policy….”

Authors Adam Barnett and Sam Bright continued in their report, self-described as a ‘reveal’.

The event has been convened by the UK-EU branch of the Heartland Institute, a U.S. group that has been at the forefront of denying the scientific evidence for man-made climate change. It is being hosted in 55 Tufton Street, the home of the Global Warming Policy Foundation, which claims – like Farage – that carbon dioxide is not a pollutant.

True, CO2 is not a pollutant. Not so true on anthropogenic climate change, which skeptics of climate alarm note has beneficial features.

Lois Perry, Heartland’s head on the UK/EU side, shot back against critics, as quoted in the DeSmog piece:

The fact that Professor Prins is associated with the GWPF, and that our event is held at 55 Tufton Street, should be seen as a badge of honour – it signifies a hub of independent thought brave enough to challenge a catastrophic group think…. Heartland is proud to be supported by private citizens who believe in intellectual freedom. [Net Zero] is proving economically ruinous for ordinary British families, damaging to our industrial base, and a direct threat to our national energy security.

Bravo!

The authors try to minimize the effect of Heartland’s push. But in another DeSmog article, How MAGA Lobbying is Undermining EU Climate Rules, author Sam Bright admits to the opposite.

European leaders are bending to the demands of U.S. climate science deniers. “The CSDDD is the greatest threat to America’s sovereignty since the fall of the Soviet Union,” the Heartland Institute, a pro-Trump U.S. think tank, tweeted on 31 March.

Bright describes the foe as follows:

The Heartland Institute is one of the world’s leading climate science denial groups. … Over recent months – along with a host of other Trump allies – the Heartland Institute has set its sights on a new target: the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD). The Heartland Institute and its anti-climate, anti-regulation peers are vocal opponents of the law – and launched an aggressive campaign to water it down, or even to see it scrapped entirely.

For the Heartland Institute and its supporters, DeSmog’s reporting serves as a ringing endorsement of their effectiveness. Even in the UK, the exaggerated arguments for the green scam are being revealed. I can conclude this article with the opening paragraph of my earlier post on their international initiative:

Great news! As reported by DeSmog, James Taylor and the Heartland Institute are off to a resounding start with their new offices in the UK/EU. What a return on investment for donors–and reason to attract more philanthropy to help consumers, taxpayers, and a greener environment.
