Forget Paris: Japan To Build 40 New Coal Power Plants

Japan may not achieve its carbon emissions target if an ambitious plan to build more coal-fired power plants moves ahead, the environment minister said, underlining Tokyo’s struggle to meet globally agreed goals to halt climate change.

Even as it champions the Paris climate agreement, Japan — the world’s fifth-biggest carbon emitter — continues its massive reliance on coal and natural gas, putting it out of step with the rest of the Group of Seven bloc and even South Korea.

The industry ministry sees coal as an important part of the country’s energy mix after the closure of nuclear reactors in the wake of the 2011 Fukushima meltdowns….

“If all those plants are built, it will become a major obstacle for Japan’s 2030 target to cut emissions,” said Yamamoto.

Under the Paris climate deal, Japan pledged to trim its carbon emissions by 26 percent in 2030 from 2013 levels.

The ministry estimates that Japan’s emissions could exceed its 2030 target by 70 million tons if all the coal power plants are built.

Volvo to go all electric from 2019

Volvo to go all electric from 2019

The internal combustion engine will still be on offer, as autofreaks.com reports, but what the headline means is that there will be at least some element of electric propulsion, including electric-only models, in every Volvo from 2019. Will other car makers follow?

Volvo today announced that every model it launches from 2019 will have an electric motor, marking the historic end of cars that only have an internal combustion engine (ICE) and placing electrification at the core of its future business.

The announcement represents one of the most significant moves by any car maker to embrace electrification and highlights how over a century after the invention of the internal combustion engine electrification is paving the way for a new chapter in automotive history.

“This is about the customer,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive. “People increasingly demand electrified cars and we want to respond to our customers’ current and future needs. You can now pick and choose whichever electrified Volvo you wish.”

Volvo will introduce a portfolio of electrified cars across its model range that consist of fully electric cars, plug in hybrid cars and mild hybrid cars.

The company will launch 5 fully electric cars between 2019 and 2021, 3 of which will be Volvo models and 2 of which will be high performance electrified cars from Polestar. These 5 cars will be supplemented by a range of petrol and diesel plug in hybrid and mild hybrid 48 volt options on all models.

This means that there will in future be no Volvo cars without an electric motor, as pure ICE cars are gradually phased out and replaced by ICE cars that are enhanced with electrified options.

It’s almost as if Australia’s rocketing power prices, unstable grid, load-shedding and blackouts were an unexpected surprise, something that must’ve been introduced by intergalactic forces. Here’s an extract from a Press Release STT put out back before the Wind Power Fraud Rally in Canberra in June 2013: PRESS RELEASE: 7 MAY 2013 Wind Power … Continue reading Renewables Disaster Deepens: Power Costs to Australian Businesses Triple

PROF. HAWKING GETS OUT OF HIS DEPTH ON CLIMATE CHANGE

PROF. HAWKING GETS OUT OF HIS DEPTH ON CLIMATE CHANGE

Professor Stephen Hawking is probably the most famous living scientist, so when he speaks, his words are given a much greater significance than those of less well known scientists. He may be an expert on black holes and cosmic radiation, but how much has he studied climate? Here is his latest pronouncement on the subject of climate change:

His main concern during his latest interview was the future of our species. A particular worry was President Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement to reduce CO2 levels.

"We are close to the tipping point where global warming becomes irreversible. Trump’s action could push the Earth over the brink, to become like Venus, with a temperature of two hundred and fifty degrees, and raining sulphuric acid," he told BBC News.
"Climate change is one of the great dangers we face, and it’s one we can prevent if we act now. By denying the evidence for climate change, and pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement, Donald Trump will cause avoidable environmental damage to our beautiful planet, endangering the natural world, for us and our children."

For such an intelligent man I am surprised that he has so readily bought in to the alarmist meme. As with many such articles it leaves me wishing I could ask him to really justify his pronouncements. How does he know "we are close to a tipping point"? He is allowed to make the claim without any challenge. His other claims are equally bizarre. He gets away with parroting the alarmist lines without any justification. As for Earth becoming like Venus, that is an extraordinary claim that even pro-alarmist climate scientists have not made. He gives not one shred of evidence for it and nor was it challenged. Propaganda, pure and simple. I would really like to see him rebut something like this article, for example. But this he would never do.

I wonder if he has given much serious study of the science. He is just a well known person, like Prince Charles and the Pope who has a following among the public and as many of the public know nothing of the science either they will be likely to take notice of someone that they believe will know more than they do.
