Joe Romm’s “The Climate Ate My Homework! (re Southern California fires)

“In a rational and moral world, the catastrophe of the Los Angeles fires, fueled in part by climate change, would be one of many climate ‘Pearl Harbors’ that might help wake up the public to the urgent need for climate action.” (- Joe Romm, last week)

“Is it just a coincidence that the worst of the worst happened in California, the Climate State? The Green State? The DEI State? Joe, the mainstream is not buying your ‘Climate Ate My Homework’ reasoning.” (below)

Just add “policy” in two places in Romm’s quotation above, and substitute “inaction” for “action” at the end, and his conclusion can be fixed. But who is Joe Romm? And what is his track record? I have tangled with Angry Joe for decades (I am a ‘sociopath’ to him) and can address these questions.

Who Is Joe Romm?

Joe Romm has been a trenchant voice for climate alarm and forced energy transformation (wind, solar, batteries, efficiency) for many decades. [1] I have tangled with him ever since the 1990s when his energy efficiencies dreams led him to praise Enron (“a company I greatly respect”) and its most fraudulent division, Enron Energy Services.

I continued to spar with him until the ‘indispensible blog‘ Climate Progress (Center for American Progress) went defunct. (My suspicion is that his emotional, virulent style–(“stunning” for the liked; “heads exploding” for the disliked) grew tiresome.)

His exaggerations are legion, including We Don’t have 12 Years to Save the Climate. We Have 14 Months, (July 2019). But go back to his “Mideast Oil Forever?” (The Atlantic Monthly, April 1996), analyzed here, where Joe (and his coauthor Charles Curtis) stated:

… let’s start by examining the likelihood that an oil crisis will occur in the coming decade. Forecasting is always risky, especially where oil is concerned, but consider what a variety of experienced energy hands from every point on the political spectrum have said in the past year alone [many experts quoted–all errant].

That “energy crisis” never happened except for government energy/climate policy increases prices and reducing reliability. The first two oil crises came from price and allocation controls–the third never came from an absence of the same.

And in Romm’s 2007 book, Hell and High Water:

We have no room for error…. Barring a major reversal in U.S. policies in the very next decade, come the 2020s, most everyone will know the grim fate that awaits the next fifty generations. [The alternative to inaction] is a [later] massive, sustained government intervention into every aspect of our lives on a scale that far surpasses what this country did during World War II.

Joe Romm Today

Joe Romm is an expert! Currently a senior research fellow at the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Science, Sustainability and the Media (PCSSM), Romm describes himself as

Former Acting Assistant Secretary of Efficiency and Renewables, Speaker, 2x TEDx, author, “The Hype About Hydrogen.” Economist Paul Krugman: “I have learned a lot of what I know about energy economics from Joe Romm.”

And:

2024 Ban Ki-Moon Award for Environmental Leadership, 2009 TIME magazine “Hero of the Environment” & Rolling Stone one of “100 people reinventing America.” Former Acting Assistant Secretary of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. CNN host Van Jones called me “The communicator’s communicator” after reading my book “How to Go Viral and Reach Millions.” Bill McKibben said, “Joe Romm understands the secret of making things go viral.”

And:

Author of 10 books, including “Climate Change: What Everyone Needs to Know” (Oxford University Press) which New York magazine called “The best single source primer on the state of climate change.”

Never shy, often wrong. Romm’s professional life is as an expert versus the ill-informed public. His premises of climate alarmism and the wind/solar/energy/efficiency to save the planet from fossil fuels (really CO2, the nonpollutant) is Romm’s multi-decade theme.

The Latest?

“In a rational and moral world,” Romm states regarding the southern California fire box,

the catastrophe of the Los Angeles fires, fueled in part by climate change, would be one of many climate “Pearl Harbors” that might help wake up the public to the urgent need for climate action. But in our world, the initial flame of disinformation that the fossil fuel companies lit over half-century ago to delay action on climate change has spread like wildfire until it’s a firestorm of falsehoods.

What disinformation! Is it just a coincidence that the worst of the worst happened in California, the Climate State? The Green State? The DEI State? Joe, the mainstream is not buying your “Climate Ate My Homework” reasoning.

“What Is the Difference Between a Psychic and a Climate Science Denier” (March 25, 2014), (expunged, but reviewed here)

I know what the similarities are between psychics and deniers. They both use unscientific methods, generally make stuff up with no evidence to support their views, and have consistently been debunked when scrutinized.

What is the difference between a psychic and a climate science denier? In fairness, psychics sometimes guess the right answer.

Earth Day post:

With 7 billion people going to 9 billion, much of the environment is unsavable … the relatively stable environment and climate that made modern human civilization possible will be ruined, probably for hundreds of years … with permanent Dust Bowls in Southwest and around the globe. And that means misery for many if not most of the next 10 to 20 billion people to walk the planet (expunged, but reviewed here).

Enough said … for now.

[1] Romm, on the other hand, correctly dismisses new nuclear capacity, hydrogen, and carbon capture & storage. He also calls a spade a spade when it comes to the failure of climate mitigation policies.

2024 Registrations Of New Electric Cars Plummet 27.5% In Germany…”Petrol Dominates”

From the NoTricksZone

By P Gosselin

How’s the Green New Deal working out in Germany? Not very well at all.

Firstly, Germany has been in recession for almost 2 years now – thanks mostly to the policies of Economics Minster Robert Habeck (Green Party), who incidentally has no education in economics, business or finance. The guy just doesn’t know what he’s doing.

Secondly, German energy prices are among the most expensive in the world, and the German power supply has become more unstable than ever. Germany is now in a rapid deindustrialization tailspin.

E-cars aren’t selling

Another indicator that the Green New Deal is faltering badly: sales of new electric cars have plummeted 27.5%, reports Blackout News here, citing data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). “Only 380,600 electric vehicles were newly registered. This corresponds to a decline of 27.5 percent compared to the previous year.”

“Diesel cars were even ahead of purely electric cars at 17.2 percent, reports Blackout News. “These figures show how far away Germany is from the government’s electromobility targets. According to the KBA, there were only 1.4 million electric cars on the roads at the turn of 2024/25, while the target is around 15 million by 2030.”

With the bad figures, it’s only natural that e-car proponents are calling for more subsidies in order to entice consumers to opt for e-cars, and higher taxes to punish those who refuse to cooperate by buying diesel or petrol engine vehicles, which are more reliable and cheaper.

Future remains bleak for e-mobility

So what does the future hold? That of course will depend on the outcome of the coming February 23 national elections. Currently the (fake) conservative CDU/CSU party are leading in the polls (29%) and are expected to win. But a new government under chancellor Friedrich Merz would likely continue Angela Merkel’s disastrous green policies, albeit at a slower rate than the current socialist-Green government under Olaf Scholz.

Growing resistance, AfD on the rise

However, Germany’s new conservative-libertarian AfD party, led by the charismatic Alice Weidel, is steadily closing the gap (22%), and today there’s even a chance of a major upset occurring come the end of February! The momentum is clearly on their side. Elon Musk called the AfD “Germany’s last hope.”

Though a victory by the anti-Green-New-Deal AfD party likely would not mean the chancellorship and thus a takeover of the reins of power,  it would be another major setback for the ever increasingly unpopular green movement.

To make matters worse for the German green movement, President Trump will certainly bring energy prices down in USA, and thus further exacerbate Germany’s economic uncompetitiveness. Germany’s needs to wake up from its green fantasies.

In summary, the next four years don’t offer much hope for Germany and its crumbling green movement. To reach the set targets, authoritarian measures certainly would need to be enacted.

Climate change reduces our Global Weather catastrophe losses

By Jo Nova

The more CO2 we emit, the less we spend on global weather disasters

Fully half of all human emissions of CO2 ever, have been emitted since 1990. This super-molecule was supposed to cause stronger cyclones, nastier storms, more droughts, floods, sea level surges, blizzards, and fires.  We were going to save a fortune by installing solar panels and windmills to reduce CO2 and slow the storms. Instead, we make more CO2 than ever, and 34 years of data suggests that the more we make the less we have to spend on flattened or flooded homes.

Munich Re says the world has experienced $298 billion dollars of catastrophic disaster losses due to weather events in 2024.  This sounds terrible in terms of mindless “big numbers” , but Roger Pielke Jnr points out that these losses are shrinking in terms of the size of the global economy.

And they are nothing compared to the size of the dead end “transition” spending. Catastrophic weather losses in 2024 “were about 0.26% of global GDP.” We are rebuilding our entire energy system, supposedly to reduce the damage caused by climate change which that hurts one quarter of one percent of our global economy.

Global Weather Losses and a Percentage of Global GDP, Roger Pielke Jnr. 2024

The more CO2 we emit, the less we spend on global weather disasters.

For what it’s worth, Pielke notes that “Global Catastrophe Losses” turns out to be in large part due to US Hurricane losses. We can argue the toss about better ways to measure weather related costs, but we can’t argue that the media spins relentlessly one sided lies about the cost of “climate change”.

If it suited their narrative they could just as easily say “burn oil” and protect us from floods and storms. Or even more easily, since it is true — the rich world survives fires, floods, droughts and storms so much better than the poor world and fossil fuels are unarguably essential to make the concrete, the fertilizer, the planes, and the fuel to power satellites and mobile phones, ambulances and fire trucks.

Fossil fuels made us rich and keep us safe.

Chris Wright Will Lead on Both Energy Abundance and Environmental Progress

By Chris Barnard

A seasoned energy executive with deep experience in oil and gas, geothermal, nuclear, and solar is nominated to run the Department of Energy. One would think that he’d be met with overwhelming bipartisan support.

One would be wrong.

Chris Wright, the CEO of Liberty Energy, was nominated in November by incoming President Donald Trump to be his Secretary of Energy. Since, he has faced undue opposition from green groups and Democrats alike. Pouncing on comments Mr. Wright made about the framing of climate change, these individuals have spared no smear tactic in their campaign to undercut Mr. Wright’s undeniable qualifications.

Yet, in stark contrast to critical headlines, Mr. Wright has repeatedly stated that we are experiencing increased global temperatures and that carbon emissions contribute to that. In fact, at my organization’s national conference in 2023, Mr. Wright discussed his lifelong environmentalism and how it informs the work he does to this day. The difference between his approach and that of his detractors, however, is that Mr. Wright is not willing to sacrifice human prosperity or quality of life for the sake of reducing emissions. As he sees it, energy poverty is one of the world’s most urgent problems and, rather than sacrificing that for environmental protection, we should balance the two. He’s right. We need more energy, not less.

Young people agree, demonstrated by a strong uptick in the popularity of reliable nuclear energy among younger generations, for example. In fact, it was primarily young people who campaigned to keep Diablo Canyon, California’s last remaining nuclear reactor, operational last year. In 2024 polling from my organization, 68% of young conservatives said they would favor a climate plan that balances both environmental and economic concerns.

Donald Trump was elected on this pro-energy dominance platform and the American people expect his administration to deliver on it. While climate activists often clamor to shut down oil and gas, the reality is that we need secure and reliable energy to power our lives, protect our homeland, and compete on the global stage with the likes of China. Oil and gas demand is going up, not down, and rather than fist-bumping Saudi royalty or loosening sanctions on murderous regimes, we should be unleashing it right here at home with the highest environmental standards and lowest emissions in the world. As an avid outdoorsman, Chris Wright understands that better than anyone.

But it doesn’t just stop there. America should be dominant in oil and gas, yes, but it should also lead the world in up-and-coming energy technologies. That’s the role of the Department of Energy. From batteries to critical minerals to nuclear plants to solar panels, China currently beats the U.S. in almost every new energy supply chain. Rather than letting the Chinese Communist Party control these supply chains, and the nearly $4 trillion market they represent, the U.S. should be out-building, out-innovating, and out-competing the rest of the world. This is an energy abundance platform – one of energy addition, not of energy subtraction.

Chris Wright also understands that. Through his work at Liberty Energy, and on the board of companies like Oklo, which is building next-generation nuclear reactors, Mr. Wright has embraced an all-of-the-above abundance approach, rather than picking winners and losers like Germany or California. As he puts it in his LinkedIn bio: “I don’t care where energy comes, as long as it is secure, reliable, affordable and betters human lives.” He understands that bottom-up innovation and free enterprise are the means to unlock long-term sustainability and prosperity, not big-government mandates or ideological agendas. He also understands that artificial government barriers, like years of permitting delays caused by red tape, are the biggest obstacle to energy abundance and environmental progress.

We need an Energy Secretary who will unleash this American energy abundance while also ensuring environmental progress. In his role at the department, Mr. Wright will have the ability to re-establish a true all-of-the-above energy vision, and technologies like nuclear fusion, advanced geothermal, and carbon capture and storage will be unleashed alongside oil and gas. With the National Laboratories under his jurisdiction at DoE, the possibilities of American energy innovation are limitless.

With global energy demand increasing at unprecedented rates, we need more energy, period. There’s no doubt in my mind that under Mr. Wright’s leadership, the Department of Energy will expand this commonsense approach across the country, paving the way for an affordable, abundant, and environmentally responsible energy future. Don’t cave to the naysayers and alarmists — the Senate should move swiftly to confirm Chris Wright’s nomination and unleash the power of American innovation for years to come.
