What I really wanted to comment on regarding the EV consultation was the gross disinformation below:

The Consultation Document is even more specific:

The so-called “industry research” comes not from the car industry at all, but from the Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), who would be better described as a Disinformation Unit. The link given takes us to their analysis here.

And the ECIU analysis makes it clear that they have based their petrol costs on the pump price, including fuel duty and VAT:

A typical comparison is the Zoe v Clio:

But when fuel duty of 69.54p/litre (inc VAT) is deducted, that £667 saving is reduced to just £167.

We also need to factor in the fact that VAT is charged at 20% on petrol, but only 5% on electricity. A 5% VAT rate on petrol would cut the saving cut to about £100.

It is of course valid to quote the full savings listed by the ECIU in relation to actual costs paid  by drivers currently.

But the Government is not doing that. Instead it is deliberately claiming that drivers will benefit from the transition to EVs. But they know full well that by the time ICE cars are banned in 2030, the taxation raised by fuel duty and VAT on fuel will have to be raised from other sources. Consequently drivers may benefit from cheaper charging, but will see those savings cancelled out by road charging or some other revenue raising scheme.

The Government also ignore the fact that EVs cost much more to buy, wiping out whatever paltry savings might be made on fuel.

The Zoe, for instance, costs £4400 more to buy then the Clio.

If a business put out misleading advertising like this, they would be hauled over the coals by the Advertising Standards Authority.

55.60379 -332322 Met Office CIMO assessed Class 5 installed 1/4/2007

I was unable to get a clear aerial view of this weather station despite numerous different options available – the site was always in such extreme shade it was almost impossible to identify. Quite how the Met Office do not consider this station as Class 5S is difficult to understand. However, there are other much more fundamental problems with this site.

I was recently sent a link to a short you tube video clip entitled “Stevenson Screen – where to (NOT) place them” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHi79lj9a-E Leaving aside the roofing issues made, the most notable point made was the requirement for screens to be located over grass. Firstly the normal close up of Dawyck view which indicates the total absence of any enclosure.

A further close up zooms into the “keep off the grass” issue.

A requirement of temperature readings is that they are taken over grass thus this station’s readings are not acceptable for inclusion in the historic temperature record….no possible debate, a technical knock out.

That the Met Office inspectorate consider such a modern site that is unenclosed, subject to significant shade and not even over an acceptable surface somehow worthy of inclusion in the climate record raises serious questions about their competence and motivation.

This is how a screen should be situated……….according to the Met Office.

The Government has begun consultations on the role of hybrid cars between 2030 and 2035:

The UK automotive and charging industries have been invited to shape the UK’s transition to zero emission vehicles, as the UK government works with the sector to harness the huge opportunities for economic growth and improve living standards for working people.

Today (24 December 2024), Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has launched a consultation to ask views from industry on how to deliver on the manifesto commitment to restore the 2030 phase out date for new purely petrol and diesel cars and make the transition to zero emissions vehicles a success.

This consultation is focused on how, not if, we reach the 2030 target. It will give the sector the opportunity to consider how the current arrangements and flexibilities are working, which hybrid cars can be sold alongside zero emission models between 2030 and 2035, and any further support measures to help make the transition a success for industry and consumers.

The decision to bring forward the ban on ICE cars to 2030 from 2035 has already been made, but it was always the intention to allow hybrids to be sold up to 2035. The main purpose of this consulation is to define which hybrids are allowed and which are not. The Government’s favoured option is to base it on a CO2 cap of 115g/km:

The consultation lists the different hybrids, and it appears that the cap would exclude all HEVs, and possibly many PHEVs:

Currently most PHEVs are classified well below the 115g limit, but it is now recognised that the official measurements are grossly underestimated. This is because in the real world, drivers use the internal combustion engine much more than thought.

In short, the hybrid market is very much a dead end for carmakers. HEVs, which account for two thirds of hybrid sales, have no future past 2030. Even if some PHEVs meet the cap, the ZEV mandate will surely be squeezed each year between 2030  and 2035, rising from 80% to 100%, meaning they will become progressively harder to sell.

Meanwhile, sales of hybrids now will continue to towards non-electric sales as far as the ZEV mandate is concerned, meaning that ZEV fines are more likely.

As a result, I cannot see any further development of hybrids in the UK market, with carmakers quickly phasing them out.
