The Biden administration moved on Thanksgiving eve to bar future coal leasing in the Powder River Basin, one of America’s most coal-rich regions, according to multiple reports.

The Powder River Basin, a region that spans parts of Montana and Wyoming, accounted for about 43% of U.S. coal in 2019, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The administration made its move to formally end coal leasing in the area and roll back previous approvals for development plans on Wednesday as Americans prepared to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday, according to E&E News.

“The decision is to make no federal coal available for future leasing,” Todd Yeager, the field manager for the Buffalo office of the Bureau of Land Management, wrote in a filing announcing the move, according to E&E News. Yeager added that the decision will take about 48 billion short tons of coal off the table for mining and development. (RELATED: ‘We Get Overlooked’: Coal Country Not Buying Biden’s ‘Just Transition’ To Green Energy)

The Trump administration, set to officially assume power in January 2025, is likely to walk back Wednesday’s moves when they get the chance to do so, according to The Hill. The Biden administration signaled that it could be moving to end coal leasing in the Powder River Basin in May when it released its proposals.

Republican Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso slammed the administration’s choice to end future coal leasing in the Powder River Basin, according to The Hill.

“After the American people issued a stunning rebuke to President Biden, he continues to punish Wyoming communities,” said Barrasso. “I will work with President Trump and his team to reverse this and other midnight regulations.”

National Grid & The Hornsea Battery

By Paul Homewood

This is not just dishonest, it is dangerously so!

The storage will be 600 MWh, and is not designed to “be used when needed”. Hornsea 3 will have a capacity of 2.9 GW, so 600 MWh would only be enough to last 12 minutes when the wind stops blowing.

Its real role is to balance grid frequency, as wind output can fluctuate even on a minute to minute basis.

This storage would not be needed if we were not so reliant on wind power, and its costs won’t be borne by Oersted, who will either be paid handsomely by the National Grid for balancing services, or alternatively profit from the high power prices on offer at times of short supply.

The National Grid, however, are being deceitful by trying to persuade the public that storage schemes like this one will solve the problem of wind intermittency.

Endless Summer At The New York Times

“ENDLESS SUMMER
Dec. 21, 2006

IT’S not that I don’t like 60-degree days and eating fresh spinach right out of my garden in December. But the extended growing season is one of the signs of global warming. It goes hand in hand with polar bears dying in the Arctic as the sea ice shrinks.”

With Warmer Weather, Different Decisions to Make – The New York Times

“The End of Snow?
Feb. 7, 2014

Nothing besides a national policy shift on how we create and consume energy will keep our mountains white in the winter — and slow global warming to a safe level.”

“The End of Snow”

bigger climate extremes, more natural disasters, the specter not of a world where humans suffer through these things and find ways to survive but where we’ve made the planet so uninhabitable that, in the longer run, the planet survives but we don’t.”

No, BBC, Atlantic Hurricane Season Did Not Break Records

By Paul Homewood

image

The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season is coming to an end and it has been an active one overall.

There have been 18 named tropical storms, with 11 of those reaching hurricane strength and five becoming major hurricanes – category three and above.

An average season would bring 14 storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes.

Some records have been equalled or broken but the active weather was not spread evenly across the season. In fact the middle of the season, normally the peak, was very quiet.

.

Despite claims of “records broken”, the BBC makes no mention of what these might be!

Unsurprising, because no records were broken, unless you count Beryl which was claimed to be the earliest Cat 5 on record, which has no significance whatsoever.

Instead, although above average, the number of hurricanes and major ones were not exceptional at all.

Atlantic hurricanes, of course, have only been comprehensively monitored for the last thirty years or so, thanks to full satellite coverage and hurricane hunter aircraft robust enough to fly into the centre of the most powerful storms. Therefore it is impossible to draw meaningful conclusions about the longer term trends. Nevertheless the lull during the 1970s and 80s, which was due to the cold phase of the AMO, is evident, as is the busy period prior when the AMO was warm.

The best data we have is for US landfalling hurricanes, which were much more comprehensively monitored and recorded. Here there were five hurricanes, two of which were major ones at landfall. Neither were exceptional.

Finally let us go back to what NOAA concluded in their latest review of hurricanes earlier this year:

No increase in frequency

No increase in intensity
