German government collapses amid row over Net Zero targets

Net Zero climate dogmatism can seriously damage your country’s governance. German elections are expected as soon as March, six months ahead of schedule as the ‘traffic light coalition’ crumbles. Relentless pursuit of the so-called ‘energy transition’ hasn’t helped the economy, amid ever-rising energy costs.

Germany’s fragile government has collapsed after Olaf Scholz fired his finance minister on Wednesday evening, reports The Telegraph.

The Chancellor sacked Christian Lindner after days of crisis talks and amid a deluge of rumours that his turbulent coalition was about to come to an end.
. . .
Mr Lindner, head of the pro-business Free Democrats, had been pushing for corporate tax relief and a delay to net zero targets as part of a comprehensive package to get the economy moving after years of stagnation.
. . .
Mr Scholz formed Germany’s first ever three-party coalition in 2021 on the promise to “dare more progress”.

However, plans to focus on investing in the green transition and modernise Germany’s outdated infrastructure were thrown into chaos two months later by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Mr Scholz and his ministers then had to switch into crisis mode as they sought new energy suppliers after previous governments had almost exclusively bought natural gas from the Kremlin.

Ideological struggles, particularly between the Greens and the pro-business Free Democrats quickly emerged over issues including fuel subsidies and the planned shutdown of the country’s remaining nuclear power plants.

An attempt by the Greens to ban all new gas heating installations in private homes led to the government’s popularity plummeting, while Mr Scholz was often criticised for an inability to communicate properly with the public.

Polling has shown the coalition, often referred to as the traffic light coalition due to the colours of the three parties involved, as the least popular of any since polling began.

Mr Scholz points to the fact that the energy crisis has been stabilised as proof that his government has made progress despite the negative press.

Ed Miliband’s Plan for Zero Carbon Electricity by 2030 is a Damning Indictment of the Whole Net Zero Agenda

From THE DAILY SCEPTIC

by Paul Homewood

Labour’s manifesto promised we would have a zero carbon electricity system by 2030. It is a pledge that Ed Miliband has been making for years, not least in his party conference speech last year, and it was also one of Labour’s ‘Five Missions for a Better Britain’ policy pledge launched last year.

It would therefore be reasonable to presume that Miliband actually had a detailed plan of how he would achieve this and how much it might all cost. It came as a surprise then when, shortly after taking office, he asked the National Energy System Operator, NESO, to provide practical advice on achieving his target.

NESO has now responded with some bad news.

Many energy experts have long argued that a zero carbon grid simply is not possible at these timescales, because you cannot run a grid predominantly on intermittent renewable energy. It turns out that NESO, whose job is to make sure that Britain has the electricity it needs every second of the day, agrees.

Their report sent to Ed Miliband emphasises that we will need to retain a full fleet of gas power plants, to fire up when the wind does not blow and the sun does not shine:

This really is a damning indictment not only of Labour’s energy policy, but also of the whole Net Zero agenda and its reliance on intermittent renewable energy.

Even though NESO says that gas power will only supply 5% of our electricity, there will be many days when we will still need it for half or more. And keeping a fleet of gas plants on standby creates problems of its own. They will need to be fully manned, maintained and ready to fire up as and when needed, all of which will cost a lot of money. With these plants standing idle most of the time, operators will demand billions in standby payments, all of which will end up on our energy bills.

The NESO report also confirms that the increase in wind and solar power demanded by Miliband will drastically increase bills, not lower them as we were promised.

Not only is renewable energy more expensive to produce than gas generation, there are indirect costs to consider, such as paying for standby capacity, costs of storage, curtailment payments when we have too much wind and grid upgrades.

Analysis of NESO data suggests that annual costs could be £20 billion higher by 2030 if Miliband’s plans are carried through.

NESO also says that annual investment of £48 billion will be needed between now and 2030 to achieve targets.

But all of this expenditure will merely end up duplicating what we already have.

If this was not all bad enough, over reliance on intermittent renewables will mean that we will end up having energy rationing. According to NESO, households will have to switch off appliances at times of peak demand. Currently, of course, gas generation is turned up and down to match demand.

NESO hopes the public will do it voluntarily! Good luck with that.

Unsurprisingly, Ed Miliband has already been bragging that this new report proves that his clean power plan is both achievable and will lead to cheaper electricity. Both are outright lies.

But it looks like we will learn this the hard way.

WORLD BANK LOSES £41BILLION ON CLIMATE CHANGE PROJECTS

This story has not been given much publicity at all here in the UK, which is odd since normally such a thing would be headline news. It is yet another example of the way in which the media appear to not want to draw the public’s attention to anything which runs contrary to the ideology of climate change. How can £41 billion not be accounted for? This money has come from our taxes and shovelled into the World Bank and then disappeared. Watch the excellent Paul Burgess video linked below to see the whole story.

How to Lose $41 Billion (and go unnoticed)

Will the Western governments now think twice before putting any more money into this black hole? I bet Donald Trump will be more careful when he takes over the USA presidency next January! The voters are fed up with this kind of ridiculous nonsense, which is one reason why they voted for Trump.

President-Elect Trump’s Climate/Energy Policy: 100-Day Action Plan a Good Start

Ed. Note: This post was originally posted on January 19, 2017, with Donald Trump on deck to take the Presidency.

“Good news indeed! Energy cuts are easy cuts compared to the hard budget choices that lie ahead in the transition from statism and stagnation to a vibrant, coordinated, expanding entrepreneurial economy.”

Rome is not burning, but Joe Romm at Climate Progress is. “Will Trump go down in history as the man who pulled the plug on a livable climate?” he writes, with the subtitle, “The fate of humanity is in the hands of a denier who pledged to kill domestic and global climate action and all clean energy research.”

Really, Joe?

But Romm goes on to (usefully) report:

The Australian journalist Graham Readfearn notes that while you can’t find Trump’s original “100 day action plan” for energy and climate on the campaign website anymore, “it was archived by Wayback Machine”.

Here is my 100-day plan:

  • We’re going to rescind all the job-destroying Obama executive actions including the Climate Action Plan and the Water of the U.S. rule.
  • We’re going to save the coal industry and other industries threatened by Hillary Clinton’s extremist agenda.
  • I’m going to ask Trans Canada to renew its permit application of the Keystone Pipeline
  • We’re going to lift moratoriums on energy production in federal areas
  • We’re going to revoke policies that impose unwarranted restrictions on new drilling technologies. These technologies create millions of jobs with a smaller footprint than ever before.
  • We’re going to cancel the Paris Climate Agreement and stop all payments of U.S. tax dollars to U.N. global warming programs.
  • Any regulation that is outdated, unnecessary, bad for workers, or contrary to the national interest will be scrapped. We will also eliminate duplication, provide regulatory certainty, and trust local officials and local residents.
  • Any future regulation will go through a simple test: is this regulation good for the American worker? If it doesn’t pass this test, the rule will not be approved.

AIso importantly, Trump (as Romm noted) has announced a plan to cut $100 billion in climate related federal funding over eight years, which would require “zeroing out all federal clean energy R&D, efforts to help countries around the globe deal with climate and the entire government’s climate science effort.”

Good news indeed! Energy cuts are easy cuts compared to the hard budget choices that lie ahead in the transition from statism and stagnation to a vibrant, coordinated, expanding entrepreneurial economy.
