MET OFFICE CATALOGUE OF OMISSIONS AND FAILINGS (NEW REPORT)

The letter in the link below highlights a catalogue of omissions and failings by the Met Office in relation to temperature measuring stations in the UK. These failings are quite extraordinary for any professional organisation to be charged with, but when the data they produce is being used as a basis for billions of pounds of government expenditure it is even worse. The conclusion that can be drawn is that the very foundation of global warming is based on unreliable evidence.

The letter is quite long, but well worth reading in full.

Climate: Losing Politics (time to end the futile, wasteful crusade?)

Nat Cohn identified climate/energy transformation as a losing strategy in “Why Are Democrats Having Such a Hard Time Beating Trump?” (November 2, 2024). “Whatever happens Tuesday, it’s fair to say this campaign has not gone as smoothly as Democrats expected,” he stated in New York Times‘s The Tilt. Some quotations follow.

“How is Mr. Trump still so competitive? The simplest answer is that the national political environment just isn’t as conducive to a Democratic victory as many might imagine.”

“Trust in the media, ‘experts’ and scientists plunged. Younger Americans took to social media — perhaps with the help of algorithmic changes — to vent their frustrations with an aging president, high prices, lost opportunity and anger at a system that wasn’t working for them.”

“[Democrats] enacted much of this agenda over the last 16 years, but many voters still aren’t satisfied with the state of the country.”

“Inflation and high interest rates could be blamed on high government spending stimulating excessive demand. High gas prices could be blamed on suspending drilling permits and the termination of the Keystone pipeline project.”

“The party championed a tough response to the virus…. It … sought to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and spent trillions on stimulus. As the pandemic ended, all of this quickly became a liability.”

“On issue after issue, Democrats have responded by moving to the right. Most obviously, Ms. Harris had to back away from positions she took when the progressive cultural ascendancy was near its peak in 2019 — a ban on fracking …. But the Democratic shift isn’t simply about backing away from positions taken during a Democratic primary. Across the board, Democrats have de-emphasized policies they preached with confidence to a general electorate only a few years ago.”

If Kamala loses, the recriminations will be fast and furious. And the Green New Deal is part of the problem, the subject of yesterday’s post. If Kamala wins, she will be the most unpopular president on Day One. But will her Progressive Left even notice? Or will they race down the road to serfdom as if getting there will bring propensity and stability?

New Study Finds Arctic Warming, Declining Sea Ice May Be A ‘Benefit’ To Polar Bears And Ringed Seals

The polar bear plight has quietly disappeared from the catastrophic global warming narrative.

According to new research, the body condition of polar bears and ringed seals (their prey) has been stable to improving from 2008-2022 despite Arctic warming and sea ice decline during this period.

This is the opposite of what was predicted to happen, as it has been assumed intact sea ice is essential to polar bear health and survival.

“…polar bear body condition and recruitment during 2018-2022 were largely within or above observed annual means during 2008-2017.”

“A lack of trend in environmental and ecological variables or polar bear body condition…during 2008-2022 is suggestive that the Chukchi Sea polar bear population was likely stable during this time.”

“Studies in both the Chukchi Sea and adjacent southern Beaufort Sea have shown improved ringed seal body condition and pup production following and during years with lower spring or summer sea ice cover, earlier sea ice breakup, or thinner ice.”

“…an increase in the duration of open water during the summer and the associated increase in ocean productivity with warming may benefit polar bear prey species.”

Mining Industry Needs $2.1 Trillion Dollars in New Investment to Meet Net-Zero Demand for Raw Materials

From NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT

By Paul Homewood

Just another trillion or two!

Despite the growth in metals supply over the last decade, BloombergNEF’s (BNEF’s) annual Transition Metals Outlook finds that there are still not enough raw materials to meet growing demand. This supply squeeze could slow the adoption of clean energy technologies. In order to meet the demands of a net-zero emissions world, BNEF estimates $2.1 trillion is needed in new mining investments by 2050.

The report indicates that key energy transition metals such as aluminum, copper and lithium could face deficits in primary supply this decade – some as soon as this year. According to BNEF’s Economic Transition Scenario (ETS) – which is driven by the cost competitiveness of technologies and assumes no new policy support – the world could require 3 billion metric tons of metals between 2024 and 2050 to properly build out low-carbon solutions such as electric vehicles, wind turbines and electrolyzers. That number rises to 6 billion tons to reach net zero in 2050.

Kwasi Ampofo, head of metals and mining at BNEF and lead author of the report said, “the prolonged deficit of these metals will lead to higher prices for raw materials, which increases the cost of clean energy technologies. High costs could slow their adoption, and the energy transition at large”.
