Waddington WMO 03377 – The UK all time highest temperature holder? Major misrepresentation uncovered.

53.17539 -0.52333 Met Office CIMO assessed Class 4 Installed 1/1/1946

Waddington is obviously another of the more than 100 aviation sites in the UK, the majority being operational or former military airports. It is just south of Lincoln with weather stations at RAF Cranwell 10 miles to the south, RAF Coningsby 15 miles to the south east and (oddly importantly) the recently closed RAF Scampton 10 mikes to the north. It is listed on the Met Office Historic Stations data with readings going back to 1947 which demonstrates the most shameless Met Office misrepresentation I have encountered so far.

These types of station were established solely for aviation purposes and the readings were originally a function of the air traffic controllers who had appropriate meteorology training to advise pilots of local immediate conditions. They were not intended even for forecasting and storing historic readings were not always considered a priority. The Stevenson screens were frequently relocated usually in line with expansions and developments of the airfield or changes to the aircraft operating there. There was often more than one operational unit serving different purposes around the airfield.

The C.A.A. produces a specific guide for aviation meteorology that runs to 137 pages and demonstrates their much more complex requirements that are often incompatible with the Met Office climate data requirements. The Met Office originally recognised that the transfer of aviation site’s data to supplying historic temperature records would not be perfect stating:

“It is unavoidable that some sites do not meet all these requirements, particularly where a station set up for one purpose gradually takes on a different role, for example an airport site originally established for aviation observing may become a key synoptic or climate station while suffering the effects of urbanisation. A few sites are in city centres and may be unsuitably located close to large obstacles or even on the roof of a building.”

For whatever reasons, the Met Office more recently decided such constraints of inappropriate siting for “Climate” station’s purposes should be ignored and re-invented requirements with weasel worded claims of “Internationally agreed distances from the runway ” The end result is that inappropriate sites such as Waddington now dominate.

Tim Channon not only reviewed this site back in 2012 but also went on to expand in much more detail in a second posting relating to the site’s data record. This latter post attracted much poster commentary and clearly shows Tim’s extreme exasperation at the extraordinarily poor readings record. In recent Talkshop attempts to analyse Met Office data great assistance has been offered by reader retired auditor Dave Woolcock – he has also expressed extreme frustration at how poorly kept Met Office data actually is which will be evidenced in the near future. I strongly recommend looking at both Tim’s reports for context to issues raised below. Firstly the station review

And then the extended discussion piece:Tim knew his stuff!

Coming back to date, the site is a very poor Class 4 but personally I do not accept these sort of sites are acceptable at all for the historic temperature record as the site is far too compromised to be considered consistently reliable or accurate. I genuinely feel that those sites such I recently reviewed at Class 5 Libanus are more appropriate than Waddington. Clearly the Met Office feels otherwise and heavily promotes this site’s data…..but there is a sinister twist.

Why should anyone question the validity of the above data? Am I just some conspiracy theorist weirdo blogger? Or is a lot of this “Historic Station Data” completely bogus? Well to start with this from the Archives

“NO DAILY DATA : CLOSED 8/1953-5/1955; 7-8/1968. DATA FOR SCAMPTON SUBSTITUTED”

So with the station not operable for almost two years the Met Office (in 1996) casually just slipped in the exact same data from a station 10 miles north in lieu. The same for a period in 1968. Well that’s okay then is it? How does just slyly splicing in a different site’s data meet any form of scientific integrity.

There are numerous cases of missing daily data or obviously incorrect numbers appearing in the archived daily logs but by some unknown means the Met Office managed to compile a continuous monthly average to pass off as authoritative fact to the public which is, in fact, largely fabricated. However, going back to their claims regarding “Climate Averages” the Met Office clearly stated in response to FOI review procedure the following:

“By way of further advice and assistance as part of this internal review, I can advise you that
the Met Office is unable to supply specific details of the observing sites requested, as this is
not recorded information. We would advise you that we do not attribute unmodified values
from one station to another station.
 “{my bold}

The evidence proves that the Met Office simply dumped Scampton’s data onto Waddington when it presumably suited them to fill the empty boxes. A practise than can be seen to occur at other times as well. The evidence shows the Met Office definitely has attributed unmodified values from one station to another.

This issue does not seem to have ended. My review of nearby RAF Coningsby referred to the UK all time highest temperature recorded there on the 19th July 2022, the Met Office’s subsequent synopsis of events and their attempts to debunk and denigrate a quality investigative journalist who rightly queried issues. Here is their report. https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/binaries/content/assets/metofficegovuk/pdf/weather/learn-about/uk-past-events/interesting/2022/2022_03_july_heatwave_v1.pdf

The entire report is well worth reading but I will highlight one table in it. This records “selected” {Talkshop comment:like fine wines?} stations readings on the hottest day. What were the readings at unselected sites?

Waddington does not appear on the table and is not mentioned in the text. However, on the associated map Waddington appears just north west of the 40.3°C of Coningsby recording 39.9°C but lower than the 40.1°C shown at the extraordinarily dubious back garden Gringley-on the-Hill site further north to be reviewed soon.

The quite astonishing thing about this data is revealed when looking at the archived readings for Waddington. Quite miraculously it is now showing as 40.3°C. ………………………………..I ask readers to look the links up themselves, open the files and screen capture them to confirm I have not amended this data in any way and also to create a record for future reference.

This reading is clearly bogus and I do not feel inclined to give the Met Office the benefit of the doubt or the option of claiming yet another of their numerous “human error” excuses. Had it actually been recorded at Waddington it would have shown in their 2022 synopsis and used to “debunk” any queries of the Coningsby record. So how did that figure get there and why? What inferences will be drawn by any student studying this “historic” event in future? All those “deniers” querying the record were wrong because it was recorded at more than one site – the official records “prove” that.

I, and others, have encountered amended and misrepresented data from the Met Office very many times. I hold the view I expressed regarding Braemar – “He who controls the past controls the future. He who controls the present controls the past” This must be stopped.

MORE SCARE STORIES IN THE PRESS

It seems that scientists frequently associate their work with climate change in order to get publicity, however tenuous the link. In this example you can see that they have stretched credulity to the limit. These allegations only serve to make people more sceptical of the whole issue.

Eight Ten-Thousandths Of A Degree Per Gigaton

Guest Post By Willis Eschenbach

Well, I see that the Canadian climate scammers are no better at simple arithmetic than Philadelphia schoolteachers. Here’s the brilliant Canadian plan—make direct air capture (DAC) of CO2 compulsory. DAC means extracting CO2 directly from the air and pumping it deep underground where it won’t escape. In theory.

From the article:

Canada’s DAC protocol isn’t just about voluntary credits—it’s laying the groundwork for DAC to be integrated into compliance carbon markets, where credits are legally required rather than optional. Currently, compliance markets such as the EU Emissions Trading System and California’s Cap-and-Trade Program dominate global carbon trading.

This transition would dramatically increase demand for DAC credits by allowing major emitters, from power plants to manufacturing facilities, to purchase DAC offsets to meet government-mandated reduction targets. This shift would significantly scale up investments in DAC infrastructure, driving costs down over time.

Gosh, that sounds like climate nirvana. What’s not to like?

As usual, the devil is in the dollars … here’s how that works out.

Canada’s full federal budget is about CAD$450 billion. (CAD = Canadian Dollars)

Canada emits about 550 million tons of CO2 per year.

Per the article again:

According to CDR.fyi, over 1.6 million tons of DAC carbon credits have been purchased to date at an average price of $470 per ton.

CAD$470 per ton times 550 million tons/year ≈ CAD$260 billion per year.

They’re proposing that an amount equal to 60% of Canada’s total Federal budget be spent on Direct Air Capture (DAC) each and every year … which will do nothing. Nothing will be produced. No Canadians will be enriched. Nobody will be fed or clothed. Nothing of value will be created.

As I’ve said before, anyone proposing some climate plan like this should be required by law to publish their calculations regarding the savings in temperature from their genius idea. Here are the calculations for their plan, using the IPCC assumptions. Please note that I’m not saying the IPCC is right to claim that CO2 is the temperature control knob. I’m just using their assumptions to calculate the effects of climate policies if they are right.

After some thought, I stumbled across a simple way to estimate the relationship of CO2 emissions with temperature using the IPCC assumptions. However, I first need to give my trigger warning for those with math allergies. Fear not, it’s just multiplication. Here’s the warning:

With that out of the way, Figure 1 below shows the calculations. Instead of using emissions to calculate the change in atmospheric CO2 levels, then using atmospheric CO2 changes to calculate the change in CO2 forcing, and using those forcing changes to calculate the expected change in temperature, I thought I’d cut through the fog.

I decided to leave out all the intermediate steps, and simply see what the relationship looked like between emissions and temperature.

Figure 1. Berkeley Earth yearly surface temperature, and surface temperature estimated from cumulative anthropogenic CO2 emissions using the formula at the top of the figure. Emissions are in gigatons, Gt, which are one billion tons, or 10^9 tons. And as a reminder, correlation ≠ causation. I can get about as good a correlation with temperature using population in place of emissions … but I digress …

Note the simplicity of this method. If the IPCC is right, avoided temperature rise in degrees C is the total of the CO2 emissions avoided in gigatons, times .0008 degrees C per gigaton.

So for example, I find this:

How many tons of co2 emissions per year does the Block Island wind farm prevent?

About 40,000 tons per year

Despite its modest size, the wind farm, which cost about $300 million to build, still represents a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions — about 40,000 tons per year.

Again assuming that the IPCC claims are correct, using the conversion factor of 0.0008°C per gigaton of CO2 emissions avoided, we find that Block Island is responsible for an avoided warming of 0.00000003°C per year.

Clearly a “significant reduction” … here’s more about the Block Island fiasco.

Here’s another example. In 2022, the IEA said:

Increased deployment of clean energy technologies such as renewables, electric vehicles, and heat pumps helped prevent an additional 550 Mt in CO2 emissions.

Sounds impressive, all right … but when we convert it to temperature, it works out to an avoided warming from all of those technologies of 0.0004°C per year … gonna take a while at that rate.

To return to Canada, at the CAD$470 per ton Direct Air Capture (DAC) cost referenced above, the 7.4 Gt of avoided CO2 emissions by 2050 will cost about CAD$3.5 TRILLION dollars.

And for that gigantic expense, the POSSIBLE THEORETICAL cooling in 2050AD will not be a tenth of a degree. It will not even be a hundredth of a degree.

It will be a pathetic six-thousandths of a degree. Lost in the noise. Unmeasurable.

Canada is proposing spending trillions for an outcome too small to measure, 0.006°C of avoided warming by 2050. How did this ever get to be thought of as a reasonable course of action?

Finally, please don’t say “But if Canada does it the rest will follow their noble example!” or the like. First, the Chinese and the Indians won’t follow, they’re realists. Next, people in almost every other country are waking up and realizing that spending $3.5 TRILLION for a possible cooling of 0.006°C a quarter century from now is bull goose looney, not to mention totally unaffordable.

Fun fact for today. Only three countries remain devoted to the chimeric idea of “Net Zero By 2050″—Canada, Australia, and the UK. The Commonwealth needs to wake up. People are getting fooled. Here’s what the Canadians think they are doing.

Wow, pretty impressive! CO2 emissions have gone flat! Let’s throw more money at it!

However, out here in the real world, this is what the Canadian change looks like.

No matter how many trillions of dollars the Canadians waste on emissions control, it will make no difference. Canada could go to net zero tomorrow. It would make no difference.

WAKE UP, DEAR FRIENDS!

Here, after a bone-dry January, the “Pineapple Express” is headed toward the US Pacific Northwest again. Starting at midnight, we’re slated to get five inches (125 mm) of rain in the coming week.

So once again, the world is constantly changing. What’s not to like?

My very best to each and every one of you,

Worlds largest concentrated solar boondoggle is going out of business after just 11 years

By Jo Nova

The PR writers want us to believe the legendary Ivanpah has been beaten out by better cheap solar, and that this is somehow a “success”. But the truth is, it’s been killed by the same subsidies and crooked market that birthed it.

The Big Government Blob distorted the free market, and created a boom in solar power. But the business case was not that good, there was no miracle in the storage of electricity, nobody wanted fried birds, and the subsidies kept forcing more solar power generation in at the same time of day.

Since there were too many generators at lunchtime and not enough customers, the last surviving part of the free market has solved the imbalance.

Just another artificial boom and bust

In 2014, the project cost $2.2 billion dollars. Ivanpah has 173.000 heliostats, and theoretically could make 390 megawatts in a perfect moment. But no one in their right mind would have spent so much to get so little, so the government spent $1.6 billion taxpayer dollars as a “loan guarantee”.

I wonder how that is working out for the taxpayers?

LOS ANGELES (AP) — What was once the world’s largest solar power plant of its type appears headed for closure just 11 years after opening, under pressure from cheaper green energy sources. Meanwhile, environmentalists continue to blame the Mojave Desert plant for killing thousands of birds and tortoises.

The Ivanpah solar power plant formally opened in 2014 on roughly 5 square miles of federal land near the California-Nevada border. Though it was hailed at the time as a breakthrough moment for clean energy, its power has been struggling to compete with cheaper solar technologies.

Even the Sierra Club didn’t like it:

“The Ivanpah plant was a financial boondoggle and environmental disaster,” Julia Dowell of the Sierra Club said in an email.

“Along with killing thousands of birds and tortoises, the project’s construction destroyed irreplaceable pristine desert habitat along with numerous rare plant species,” Dowell said. “While the Sierra Club strongly supports innovative clean energy solutions and recognizes the urgent need to transition away from fossil fuels, Ivanpah demonstrated that not all renewable technologies are created equal.”

Apparently the plant would sometimes blind drivers too. It certainly blinded investors.

The company did not reply to AP questions about what would happen to the giant industrial wreckage.
