Truths about Coral Bleaching: CO2 Warming vs Reduced Clouds Cover?

Jim Steele

The coral that now form our modern reefs evolved 240 million years ago during the Age of Dinosaurs when coral formed a marvelously fluid symbiotic relationship with symbiodinium algae. The new algae symbionts absorbed CO2 and produced sugars via photosynthesis for the coral. In turn coral respiration produced CO2 that supported the algae’s photosynthetic production. This symbiotic relationship evolved when CO2 was 4 times above today’s concentrations and global temperatures were several degrees higher. Takashima (2006) reports the mid-Cretaceous earth “surface temperatures were more than 14°C higher than today,” a time when dinosaurs roamed Antarctica. Atlantic warm pool sea surface temperatures reached a maximum of 42°C (107°F).

That evolutionary history explains why shallow-water coral are now restricted to the warmest ocean waters. Graphic A shows the location of today’s coral. Graphic B shows the oceans regional temperatures. Corals are most abundant in the warmest waters of the Indian Ocean and Western Pacific Warm Pool, also known as the Coral Triangle. There, sea surface temperatures (SST) reach 28-30°C (82-86°F), sometime a little higher.

In contrast, the eastern tropical Pacific, experiences cooler SSTs due to upwelling typically in the range of 20°C (68°F). With the eastern tropical Pacific 8-10°C (14-18°F) cooler than the tropical western Pacific, there coral reefs are scarce and restricted to much smaller Atlantic and eastern Pacific warm pool regions. So why are today’s warm temperatures blamed for coral bleaching? Why does CNN report bleaching as catastrophic?

To survive 240 million years of extreme environmental change that required a fluid symbiosis. More recently during glacial maximums sea levels fell by 120 meters, killing all the shallow water coral reefs. As the ice melted, sea levels then rose 10 times faster than sea level rise today. Such rapid sea level changes greatly altered the sunlight reaching the surviving coral and the amount of nourishment the algae could produce.

Increased sunlight produces excessive dangerous Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) like hydrogen peroxide and superoxides during the light reactions of photosynthesis that produce highly charge electrons and singlet oxygen by splitting water. Normally algae have several methods of neutralizing those dangerous ROS molecules but a rapid increase in sunlight, and thus ROS, sometimes overwhelms their protective systems. Thus, many corals threatened by increasing ROS, have adopted the survival strategy of ejecting their mal-adapted algae (i.e. bleaching). Coral can re-absorb those algae later when the extreme light conditions subside or absorb new symbiodinium algae adapted to the higher light conditions.

Today the major factor affecting solar insolation is changing cloud cover associated El Nino-La Nina oscillations. As seen in graphic C, during La Nina-like conditions heavy cloud cover reduces solar insolation over the coral triangle. During an El Nino, that heavy cloud cover shifts eastward causing greater solar heating around the Great Barrier Reef. The El Niño events of 1982-83, 1998, 2010, and 2015-2016 are all associated with massive coral bleaching.

Great Barrier Reef bleaching can also happen during a La Nina, but only when a high-pressure weather system sits over the reef and locally reduces cloud cover. Either way, reduced cloud cover both increases surface temperatures and overwhelms the algae’s photosystems by increasing ROS production. That prompted some scientists to argue that surface warming alone, greater than 1°C degree, will cause bleaching and that fit their climate crisis narratives. Alarmists like Fred Pearce on Yale 360 fear mongered global warming threatens coral writing, “The coral reefs of the tropics have looked doomed” … “Some experts say they will be gone by mid-century, the first great ecosystem casualty of the climate emergency.”

However, the science of coral bleaching now reports it is changes in the sun’s insolation that primarily drives bleaching by increasing ROS production during photosynthesis along with solar heating. If global warming alone is causing coral bleaching and rising coral deaths, we would expect a steady decline in coral cover as CO2 rises. However, changes in coral cover have oscillated as we would expect from the El Nino oscillation. After recent El Nino-related massive bleaching events impacted nearly 90% of Australia’s corals, in 2022 the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) reported the highest levels of coral cover across two-thirds of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) in over 36 years (graphic D).

Sleep well! Corals are not threatened by rising CO2.

Problem for study claiming ‘ocean-surface warming four times faster now than late-1980s’

Five oceans
Their problem is the reliance on a metric called Earth’s Energy Imbalance (EEI). Nikolov and Zeller’s recent peer-reviewed paper, which we featured here, showed any such reliance (as per this study) must be questioned. N&Z say: ‘the paper provides a new explanation of the Earth’s Energy Imbalance (EEI) showing that it does not represent “heat gain” by the Earth system as presently assumed. The mainstream climate scientists and IPCC currently misinterpret EEI as “the most fundamental indicator for climate change”’. That puts the premise in the Reading paper’s title: Quantifying the acceleration of multidecadal global sea surface warming driven by Earth’s energy imbalance, in that category. N&Z go on to say: ‘In other words, the adiabatic dissipation of thermal kinetic energy in ascending air parcels gives rise to an apparent EEI, which does not represent “heat trapping” by increasing atmospheric greenhouse gases as currently assumed. We provide numerical evidence that the observed EEI has been misinterpreted as a source of energy gain by the Earth system on multidecadal time scales.‘

Ocean temperatures were rising at about 0.06 degrees Celsius per decade in the late 1980s, but are now increasing at 0.27 degrees Celsius per decade, says Reading University.

Published today (Tuesday, 28 January 2025) in Environmental Research Letters, the study helps explain why 2023 and early 2024 saw unprecedented ocean temperatures.

Professor Chris Merchant, lead author at the University of Reading and National Centre for Earth Observation, said: “If the oceans were a bathtub of water, then in the 1980s, the hot tap was running slowly, warming up the water by just a fraction of a degree each decade. But now the hot tap is running much faster, and the warming has picked up speed. The way to slow down that warming is to start closing off the hot tap, by cutting global carbon emissions and moving towards net-zero.”

Energy imbalance

This accelerating ocean warming is driven by the Earth’s growing energy imbalance – whereby more energy from the Sun is being absorbed in the Earth system than is escaping back to space.

This imbalance has roughly doubled since 2010, in part due to increasing greenhouse gas concentrations, and because the Earth is now reflecting less sunlight to space than before.

Global ocean temperatures hit record highs for 450 days straight in 2023 and early 2024. Some of this warmth came from El Niño, a natural warming event in the Pacific.

When scientists compared it to a similar El Niño in 2015-16, they found that the rest of the record warmth is explained by the sea surface warming up faster in the past 10 years than in earlier decades. 44% of the record warmth was attributable to the oceans absorbing heat at an accelerating rate.

Coningsby WMO 03391 – An “Internationally Agreed Distance from the Runway” Record Holder and “A Denier’s tale”.

53.09390 -0.17291 Met Office CIMO Assessed Class 3 Archived temperature records from 1/1/1978

Before reading any of this review I strongly recommend viewing this short, but quite spectacular, YouTube clip to fully appreciate the locality of this alleged UK all time highest temperature reading.

For aficionados of military aviation, “Ted’s” Youtube channel is a must watch and entertaining for even those of casual interest. What the above clip dramatically shows is the enormous amount of heat generated by high performance jet engines especially on take off. The heat haze is certainly not restricted to the local vicinity. Everyone who has been anywhere near either a military or commercial jet propelled aircraft will have experienced the effects in one way or another. Even Wikipedia dedicated a page to Jet Blast which warrants quoting in full.

“Jet blast is the phenomenon of rapid air movement produced by the jet engines of aircraft, particularly on or before takeoff. A large jet-engine aircraft can produce winds of up to 100 knots (190 km/h; 120 mph) as far away as 60 metres (200 ft) behind it at 40% maximum rated power. Jet blast can be a hazard to people or other unsecured objects, and can reach wind speeds comparable to those of a Category 5 hurricane, causing roof failure or total collapse in buildings, and severely damaging or destroying things like mobile homes, utility buildings, and trees.

Despite the power and potentially destructive nature of jet blast, there are relatively few jet blast incidents. Due to the invisible nature of jet blast and the aerodynamic properties of light aircraft, light aircraft moving about airports are particularly vulnerable. Pilots of light aircraft frequently stay off to the side of the runway, rather than follow in the centre, to negate the effect of the blast. Occasionally, when the ground surface is badly chosen, jet blast from aircraft can rip up sections of asphalt weighing up to tens of kilograms (double-digits of pounds), damaging the aircraft.

Maho Beach in Sint Maarten is famous for its unique proximity to the runway of  Princess Juliana International Airport, allowing people to experience jet blast, a practice that is discouraged by the local authorities. A tourist was killed on 12 July 2017 when she was blown away by jet blast, which caused her head to smash into concrete. Skiathos Airport in Greece similarly allows people to experience jet blast, as its runway is located near a public road.”

This is a wider scale view of Coningsby {note none of the town of Coningsby is visible.}

A few questions any reasonable impartial person may ask. How do those Typhoon Jets get to and from the hangars to the north west and the runway? Just how close are powered jets getting to the screen? What effect are the jets having on the temperatures recorded?

Answers to the first two are – via the taxiway and just 20 metres. The Met Office’s answer to the third is that readings are taken an “internationally agreed distance from the runway” which is a metric that simply does not exist. Most interestingly a former Met Office manager who provided me with information on Metrology made the point ” For example a site on an airport may present no problems for a MiG; the quicker response of the Pt may catch a quick burst of an aeroplane’s exhaust as it passes en route for take-off or landing.   This will result in a higher Maximum Temperature recorded for that day. “{my bold}

It seems, however, that the Met Office does not accept Jet Blast can affect temperature readings at aviation sites and later tried to “debunk” claims that it can. This rather makes their installation of Jet Blast Screens at Heathrow airport around that weather station either a pointless exercise or an indication that they do recognise jet blast when it suits them. {Tim Channon’s Heathrow review shows the Jet Blast Screen installation.}

So here is the Met Office version of events leading to Coningsby’s “record”. https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/binaries/content/assets/metofficegovuk/pdf/weather/learn-about/uk-past-events/interesting/2022/2022_03_july_heatwave_v1.pdf

I will discuss some of those other “record breaking” in other reviews but note the 40°C threshold was crossed only in other Class 5 junk sites.

At the time I well remember the media hype with excited weather presenters predicting almost exactly where they anticipated records would be set and of course they were right – they had to be. Even to this day the vast majority of the UK population believe this reading was taken in the small town of Coningsby in Lincolnshire simply because that was all they were ever told in main stream media. In fact many of the residents of Coningsby itself did not know where the weather station actually was. It seems particularly strange that the Met Office could not have been honest enough to name the site where it really is as RAF Coningsby – but then just perhaps more people may have queried the readings validity.

Regardless, the Met Office opted to “debunk” any possible querying of the reading’s accuracy even to the local residents. https://www.lincolnshirelive.co.uk/news/local-news/met-office-explains-coningsby-records-8736107

“The Met Office has explained why a Lincolnshire town may be recording high temperatures and if it really is the hottest place in the county. Coningsby broke the record for the highest temperature ever recorded in the UK when it peaked at 40.3C last summer.

Some doubted the accuracy of the readings and claimed that the weather station is next to an RAF Coningsby runway which sees Typhoons taking off and producing hot gas. The Met Office debunked these theories, stating that they have a “rigorous process” in place to ensure accurate readings and that the recordings haven’t been “adversely influenced by other factors”.

Whilst MSM journalists trotted out the official Government line and dutifully peddled the climate crisis strapline, a real journalist chose to conduct proper investigative research. Chris Morrison at the Daily Sceptic used Freedom of Information requests to demonstrate that the record readings occurred concurrent with 3 Typhoon jet take offs and landings. {Similar but not the same as those in the headline youtube clip) These readings were very short term

The article continues:

The Met Office and MSM response to this diligent and demonstrably provable excellent investigative journalism was simply to brand Chris as a “Climate Change Denier”. Quite how the revealing of conveniently hidden and highly relevant facts is considered a bad thing is quite baffling. That other media outlets should openly attack Chris on behalf of the concealing Government agency is extremely worrying.

In summary, an official Met Office misleadingly named weather station is located at a major RAF base. The Stevenson screen has no jet blast protection. In addition to vast amounts of unnatural surroundings (thousands of feet of runway and taxiway, parking aprons, buildings, hangars etc) multiple high performance jet aircraft regularly take off and land and taxi past the screen in very close proximity. Three powerful jet aircraft were proved to be in action concurrent with the sudden and brief elevation and then reduction in temperature readings on what was already a hotter than normal day.

And yet despite all of this evidence, the Met Office fervently stands by their unquestionable accuracy and through its partner bodies (BBC, MSM et alia) actively denigrates anyone with the temerity to prove them wrong. This is not an acceptable situation and needs to be changed.

Finally for those interested this is a lengthy you tube clip of 26 Typhoons taxiing and taking off. You can spot the screen (through the heat haze) multiple times with the first glimpse at 2 minutes 4 seconds in. Clearly not the best place to take temperature readings to contribute to the historical temperature record of the natural environment……but the Met Office knows better.

Trump Dumps the Paris Agreement: Is it a Big Deal?

by Tilak Doshi

From THE DAILY SCEPTIC

According to the UK’s Telegraph, just hours after President Trump issued executive orders to withdraw the US from the Paris climate agreement, Ed Miliband, the British Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, “warned” Mr Trump that the rise of Net Zero is “unstoppable”. The tendentiousness of the Telegraph’s headline is remarkable. Just who is this mere Department Secretary to “warn” the Chief Executive of the world’s leading economic and military power of anything?

Evidently, the British Secretary is deluded enough to take up the mantle of responsibility to warn President Trump of ignorance in energy affairs. But Mr Miliband has company, ranging from leading academics to senior global leaders conferring at last week’s World Economic Forum in Davos. Rather than simply dismissing his antics as another sign of Mad Ed’s silly climate posturing, it behoves us to take his warning at face value.

Is the US withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement really such a big deal?

No Big Deal…

Appearing before the House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee a day after President Trump’s inauguration, Mr Miliband sought to downplay the impact of America’s planned withdrawal from the international climate treaty which Mr. Trump had announced on the same day.

He said

Other countries believed it was in their national self-interest to remain in the Paris Agreement and to continue working on these (climate) issues, because they saw both the advantages of moving forward on this and the dangers for them of not moving forward. So I think the transition is unstoppable, not fast enough, but unstoppable.

Presumably, M. Miliband was referring to Mr Trump’s previous withdrawal from the Paris agreement during his first term in office from January 2017, a move which was promptly reversed by President Joe Biden in January 2021. President Biden’s administration reversed almost every energy initiative of the previous administration. It sought to portray the first exit from the Paris agreement – and Mr Trump’s first-term Presidency – as an aberration from the liberal-progressive ‘arc of history’. After all, as it was widely claimed by the Democrat establishment and its media shills, wasn’t the Trump win in 2016 only made possible by Russian collusion?

In 2017, when Mr Trump first gave notice of withdrawal from the Paris agreement, a statutory delay of four years from the date of the agreement coming into force in November 2016 applied. In effect, the US was out of the agreement for only a few months before Trump’s first term Presidency expired. This time around, the statutory delay is one year. Thus from 2026 onwards, at least to the end of Mr Trump’s second term, the US will be not participate in any of the Paris agreement commitments including any financial obligations.

The US thus remained a party to the Paris agreement for almost the entirety of President Trump’s first term, during which its administrative staff continued participating in programmes and initiatives that were pursued under the Obama Presidency. The US State Department continued to participate in the ongoing negotiations, including co-chairing with China the Enhanced Transparency Framework.

At the COP29 UN annual climate summit held in Baku, Azerbaijan, in the shadow of Trump’s triumphant election win, Mr John Podesta – President Biden’s Climate Envoy – had no hesitation in telling governments around the world to “keep faith” in their efforts to “combat global warming”. He confidently asserted that the Trump Presidency could only slow, not stop, the transition from fossil fuels:

For those of us dedicated to climate action, last week’s outcome in the United States is obviously bitterly disappointing. … But what I want to tell you today is that while the United States federal Government, under Donald Trump, may put climate action on the back burner, the work to contain climate change is going to continue in the United States.

Gina McCarthy, President Obama’s Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and later the White House Climate Adviser for President Biden, accused the Trump administration of having “abdicated its responsibility to protect the American people and our national security” by leaving the Paris Agreement. Now representing an environmental NGO, Ms McCarthy assured her audience that “our states, cities, businesses and local institutions stand ready to pick up the baton of US climate leadership and do all they can — despite federal complacency — to continue the shift to a clean energy economy”.

The belief that the global climate agenda signified by the Paris agreement is undiminished despite the re-election of Donald Trump is not restricted to US Democrat and environmental NGO activists. At last week’s World Economic Forum in Davos, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said:

The coming years will be vital well beyond Europe. All continents will have to speed up the transition towards Net Zero and deal with the growing burden of climate change. …The Paris Agreement continues to be the best hope for all humanity. So Europe will stay the course and keep working with all nations that want to protect nature and stop global warming.

…But Trump’s Second Shot Makes It a Big Deal

President Trump’s second term is unlikely to repeat the mistakes of his first one. He has taken a sledgehammer approach to replacing Democrat activists in Government with staff more inclined to his ‘MAGA’ vision. President Trump has long said he believes the biggest mistake he made during his first term was hiring people disloyal to his campaign promises.

Harvard University’s Robert Stavins – a leading academic who has done decades of research and published extensively on international climate negotiations – seems to find it disappointing that “Trump now seems determined to purge the upper ranks for the executive branch of anyone other than loyalists”. As if an incoming President would seek to hire disloyal staff!

Few would disagree with White House spokesman Steven Cheung, who said that: “No one should be surprised that those being hired should align with the mission of the administration. Nobody in private industry would ever hire someone who isn’t mission focused, and the Government should be no different.” Brian McCormack, Chief of Staff to National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, finds President Trump’s hiring decisions similarly unexceptional: “Every President is entitled to have a staff and the advisers that he needs to implement the goals that the American people elected him to pursue.”

President Trump’s detractors have suggested that despite his pulling the US out of the Paris agreement, it will matter little to the global climate agenda. The ‘show must go on’ and true believers will step in to the breach. Thus, last week’s Reuters headline about billionaire climate warrior Michael Bloomberg who “steps in to help fund UN climate body after Trump withdrawal”.

Climate alarmists Ed Miliband, Ursula von der Leyen, Gina McCarthy and Michael Bloomberg share an underlying presumption that the energy transition away from fossil fuels to the brave new world of renewable energy and ‘clean tech’ is made inevitable because ‘markets demand it’ and technological change has made it possible. In the great moral crusade to ‘save the planet’, they share the fatal conceit that what they want is what the world needs.

Yet, Trump’s second term takes place in a vastly changed world from his first. The rise of populist parties in Austria, Italy, the Netherlands, Hungary, Poland, France, Germany and the UK – dismissed as the ‘far Right‘ by the mainstream media – in a Europe stricken with deindustrialisation and recession has fundamentally altered the policy presumptions that held sway just a few years ago. Ms Von der Leyen’s own party, a constituent of the European Parliament’s EPP which is the EU’s most influential political group, is now recommending a freeze of the CO2 duty, abolishing renewable energy targets and reverting to pre-2019 ‘green wave’ policies.

If Brussels is looking shaky in its anti-Trump predilections, the world of international business seems to have collapsed like a house of cards in its previous trumpeting of the ESG agenda. The ESG movement, a crucial pillar in the business sector’s buy-in of the Paris agreement, has had a series of reversals recently.

The Net Zero Asset Managers initiative and Climate Action 100+, which pushed ESG goals and decarbonisation of the American economy, suffered a flurry of high-profile exits by companies such as BlackRock, the world’s largest asset management company. “More than 70 companies have left woke ESG organisations like NZAM and Climate Action 100+ since the Committee’s investigation started,” Republican Jim Jordan told the Daily Wire.

The Net Zero Banking Alliance (NZBA) was established in April 2021 under the auspices of the United Nations and its champion Mark Carney, the ‘rock star central banker‘. It was dedicated to helping lenders reduce their carbon footprints. The group has been abandoned in quick succession by Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Wells Fargo & Co., Citigroup Inc., Bank of America Corp. and Morgan Stanley.

The ESG colossus, which seemed to have reigned supreme in business boardrooms the world over in the past decade, has now been irretrievably compromised. The adage ‘go woke, go broke‘ was right on target.

Markets and Technology Will Not Drive the Energy Transition

No, the markets do not drive the so-called energy transition and technological change obeys the laws of physics and economics. For instance, in the transportation sector, neither markets nor technology has made electric vehicles affordable or popular. Within hours of being sworn into the White House, President Donald Trump signed an executive order meant to end policies supporting EVs. In his inauguration speech, Mr Trump said: “We will revoke the electric vehicle mandate, saving our auto industry and keeping my sacred pledge to our great American autoworkers. … In other words, you’ll be able to buy the car of your choice.”

President Trump has not only given Americans their freedom to buy cars of their choice, a very big deal in that country. He has also eased bureaucrat-imposed efficiency standards for dishwashers, showerheads, refrigerators, laundry machines, toilets, gas cookers, incandescent lights and the like. Mr Trump, in short, has rescued the American consumer from the dead hand of an impoverishing green ideology that yields ultimate power to an efficiency technocracy.

These measures are part of President Trump’s flurry of executive orders which remove regulatory obstacles to the rapid development of fossil fuel resources and all associated infrastructure while seeking to prevent wind farms from being built on federal lands and waters.

President Trump’s executive order for the US to exit the Paris agreement is a huge deal, not least in saving the nation hundreds of millions of dollars which would have been spent on climate boondoggles such as President Biden’s euphemistically termed Inflation Reduction Act and vast transfers in climate funds pledged to developing countries. Let not the naysayers say otherwise.
