Two Decades of Temperature Data from Australia – Not Fit for Purpose

By Paul Homewood

An important post from Jennifer Marohasy:

Australia is a large continent in the Southern Hemisphere. The temperatures measured and recorded by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology contribute to the calculation of global averages. These values, of course, suggest catastrophic human-caused global warming.

Two decades ago the Bureau replaced most of the manually-read mercury thermometers in its weather stations with electronic devises that could be read automatically – so since at least 1997 most of the temperature data has been collected by automatic weather stations (AWS).

Before this happened there was extensive testing of the devises – parallel studies at multiple site to ensure that measurements from the new weather stations tallied with measurements from the old liquid-in-glass thermometers.

There was even a report issued by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) entitled ‘Instruments and Observing Methods’ (Report No. 65) that explained because the modern electronic probes being installed across Australia reacted more quickly to second by second temperature changes, measurements from these devices need to be averaged over a one to ten-minute period to provide some measure of comparability with the original thermometers. The same report also stated that the general-purpose operating range of the new Australian electronic weather stations was minus 60 to plus 60 degrees Celsius.

This all seems very sensible, well-documented, and presumably is now Bureau policy.

Except, this winter I have discovered none of this policy is actually being implemented.

Rather than averaging temperatures over one or ten minutes, the Bureau is entering one second extrema. This would bias the minima downwards, and the maxima upwards. Except that the Bureau is placing limits on how cold an individual weather station can record a temperature, so most of the bias is going to be upwards.

Jen Marohasy at the Goulburn weather station where the Bureau acknowledges it set a limit of minus 10 degrees on how cold a temperature could be recorded this winter, never mind that this AWS recorded minus 10.9 degrees Celsius during a previous winter.

I have known for some time that the Bureau remodel these recordings in the creation of the homogenised Australian Climate Observations Reference Network – Surface Air Temperatures (ACORN-SAT), which is subsequently incorporated into HadCRUT, which is used to inform the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Nevertheless, I naively thought that the ‘raw data’ was mostly good data. But now I am even sceptical of this.

As someone who values data above most else – this is a stomach-churning revelation.

Indeed, it could be that the last 20-years of temperature recordings by the Bureau will be found not fit for purpose, and will eventually need to be discarded. This would make for a rather large hole in the calculation of global warming – given the size of Australia.

How Government Climate Alarmists Operate

A DMI employee accused me of making up a fake DMI map yesterday after I posted a graphic showing how Arctic sea ice thickness and volume has increased since 2008.

Here was the original map

Here was my map. I masked out the thin ice because as every climate alarmist knows, thin ice isn’t important. The map I created is the one alarmists normally say they want to see.

Ruth then made an incredibly stupid tweet where she agreed with me about the importance of thick ice, but thought she was disagreeing with me.

Then, every moron on the Internet jumped in, including Jim Hunt

And finally Ruth went on this tirade, where Ruth said everything – except admit she was wrong.

There was nothing wrong with my graphic. It showed exactly what it said it showed, which is also exactly what climate alarmists say they want to see. Then a DMI employee made a idiotic baseless accusation and piled on one ridiculous tweet after another.

But the funniest tweet of the day is her last one, where she begrudgingly admits that Greenland gained ice this year.

This sort of ridiculous behavior is exactly why I have zero confidence in government climate people. She made a scurrilous and incorrect accusation and then refused to retract or apologize.

Two Decades of Temperature Data from Australia – Not Fit for Purpose – Jennifer Marohasy

What is going on with Australian temperature data? It doesn’t look good, as Jennifer Marohasy explains.

Solar Power Deal will Lower Social Tenants’ Energy Bills

.
.
This may go some way to counter complaints that it’s mostly the better-off who can afford to buy solar power and benefit from its subsidies. On the other hand even council tenant subsidies have to be paid from utility bills in the end.

Andrew James

Solar panels are to be installed in 800,000 low-income homes across England and Wales over the next five years, as part of a new government scheme.

The Dutch firm, Maas Capital is investing £160m in the project.

The panels are expected to save 100,000 tenants living in social housing hundreds of pounds, according to the UK firm Solarplicity.

The first tenants to benefit from the scheme include residents of a sheltered retirement home in Ealing, west London.

Speaking at the site, International Trade minister Greg Hands said, “This initial £160m capital expenditure programme will deliver massive benefits to some of the UK’s poorest households.

“As well as creating 1,000 jobs and delivering cheaper energy bills for up to 800,000 homes, it shows yet another vote of confidence in the UK as a place to invest and do business.”

The firm providing the panels, Solarplicity, will partner with more than 40…
