There are concerns that they will starve to death.
“Stranded seals wreak havoc in Canadian town,” reads the headline. But it’s not until the fourth paragraph when you learn that they were stranded after nearby waters suddenly froze over, preventing their return to the ocean.
“They are 4 or 5 miles from the ocean and are probably starving,” says one entry on Twitter.
More than 40 of the stranded seals are blocking traffic and the entrances to homes and businesses in Roddickton-Bide Arm, Newfoundland.
“There’s seals on the road, there’s seals in people’s driveways, the backyards, the parking lots, the doorways, the businesses,” the town’s Mayor Sheila Fitzgerald told CBC News.
Two of the animals died after being struck by a car.
Many images on social media show the seals stranded on roads and large banks of snow.
