Switzerland – Snow banks so high that the fear they will slide into the road and kill people
From reader Freddie Stoller
Funny things happen in Switzerland. The last stage of the Tour the Suisse 2019 was scheduled to cross 3 alpine passes starting from Ulrichen, crossing the Furka pass, then downhill and back up over the Susten pass, then at last up the Grimsel pass and back to Ulrichen.
This was supposed to be the king stage of the tour. Now you know what is coming. In spite of working for weeks to clear the snow and get the road ready, they managed to get the snow cleared but it is not safe to cross the Susten. The snow banks are so high that the fear they will slide into the road and kill people. Imagine, June 23rd and still not all Swiss passes open. What an irony in such a warming world where children won’t know what snow is!
Sustenpass must remain closed. Even the Tour de Suisse can not drive over the pass.

Looks like Freddie and Heine Stromdahl (see below) are correct. According to this website, the final stage of the Tour de Suisse was halted after 100 km due to snow, while the Queen stage at Tirreno Adriatico was cancelled for the same reason. The 117.7 km stage starting and finishing in Davos was cut to just under 60 km, and with the start moved from Davos to La Punt.
