After lying dormant for 95 years, Raikoke Volcano on a small island off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula just awoke in an enormous fashion.

Images captured by astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and also by radiometers and spectroradiometers of NASA satellites, show an ash plume rising as much as 10 miles (16 km) into the sky. Volcanologists say that ash plumes that high could affect the climate.

Raikoke last erupted in 1924, and before that in 1778.
