The major winter storm that pounded the Upper Midwest snow will move to the Northeast today dumping more snow mixed with freezing rain, said the NWS Weather Prediction Center in College Park, MD. The storm will then track north just off the coast of New England through Tuesday. In California, gusty winds and heavy snow will continue in the mountains with locally heavy rain at lower elevations.

In parts of Southern California, thousands of customers lost power after winds and snow-topped trees downed wires, Southern California Edison said.

“No Wi-Fi, no electricity, so it’s like we’re back in the 1800s,” Fabrice Vignati who was in Crestline — a little more than 70 miles east of Los Angeles — told CNN affiliate KTLA.

Trans-continental storm system

The trans-continental storm system that has hammered the western U.S. and northern Plains with heavy snow and blizzard conditions has now reached the Great Lakes region producing a variety of impactful weather conditions, ranging from blizzards over parts of the Upper Midwest to strong thunderstorms across the Southeast U.S.

Heavy snow, with accumulations up to 12 inches (30 cm) can be expected from the eastern Dakotas to northern Michigan on Sunday, the Weather service said.

By late Sunday, this will evolve into more of a typical nor’easter off the southern New England coast, with rain and wind near the coast and heavy snow inland. The potential exists for 8 to 16 inches of snow across interior portions of New York and extending eastward to southern Maine, with winter storm warnings in effect.

Two inches of snow per hour

New York will see up to 2 inches of snowfall each hour on Sunday and Monday, the Weather Service said, Downed trees and power lines are also possible.

Airlines have announced weather waivers for at least 38 cities including airports Newark, Philadelphia, Boston, Buffalo, Pittsburgh and Toronto, Canada and the New York area.

Ice storm warnings

Farther to the south across the central Appalachians, freezing rain will be more of a problem with the potential for up to a quarter inch of ice accretion from extreme western Maryland to central Pennsylvania where ice storm warnings are in effect. Severe travel disruptions are likely for many of these areas.

Snowfall measured in feet

Across the West Coast, a slow moving storm will affect California and southern Oregon. Periods of rain and heavy snow across the Sierra Nevada can be expected through the remainder of the weekend. “The Sierra Nevada could see snow measured in feet,” the weather service said. Lighter snow will likely reach farther east across the Intermountain West on Sunday.
