Rapid Ice Gains in Greenland – early August!

Record-smashing growth! Look at that blue line shooting almost straight upward!


“Yesterday, in the middle of summer, Greenland gained a record-smashing 4 gigatons of snow and ice,” reads the headline.

Usually in mid-Aug, Greenland’s SMB is LOSING 4Gts a day. Not yesterday, however — on Aug 10, the ice sheet GAINED an astonishing 4Gts of ice.

Denmark’s Polar Portal admits that eastern Greenland has been experiencing “unseasonally snowy weather,” and that “an increase in surface mass balance of 4 gigatons is extreme for the season,” but still tries to downplay its importance.
