October 1951 was unusual for its dryness, with England getting less than a third of its usual rainfall:
Ten years later, the weather patterns were reversed. Heavy rain was widespread and frequent, bringing floods to southern England.
It was also a very stormy month, with severe gales at times.
Temperatures ranged from 22.8C at Gillingham on the 10th (similar to the top temperature of 22.9C this October), down to minus 3.9C:
October 1971 was also a warm month, with a stormy third week, which brought localised flooding.
Daily rainfall of 100mm plus was experienced on several days, with Manchester seeing a record daily rainfall for October.
Top temperatures were 25.0C.
