Net Zero Watch welcomes ‘important intervention’ by Steve Baker

Suspension of Net Zero policies is the only way to restore market confidence in the UK

Net Zero Watch has welcomed what it calls “Steve Baker’s important intervention” in the energy cost crisis.

Speaking at a fringe event at the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham, Baker, the minister in the Northern Ireland office, said that the UK’s Net Zero plans are not affordable in the short term, and called for a temporary suspension this winter.

Mr Baker also pointed to Net Zero Watch’s plan for radically reducing energy costs this winter as an important way to restore public and market confidence.

Net Zero Watch director Dr Benny Peiser said:

Steve Baker’s important intervention is a clear and public acknowledgement of the harsh reality of an escalating energy and financial crisis. Perhaps many other ministers and MPs will be thinking along the same lines.

While it is the tax cuts that are getting media attention, it is the government’s astronomical £100bn + energy supporting package that is spooking the markets. To help British families and restore its own credibility the government must temporarily suspend the Net Zero targets until the energy cost crisis is no longer an existential threat to Britain’s finances and the economy.”
