One person was killed and four taken to hospital after a busy multi-storey car park in New York City collapsed on Tuesday.

Aerial footage showed cars piled on top of another in a jumble of cracked concrete as one official described how the Lower Manhattan building "pancaked all the way to the cellar floor".

Kazimir Vilenchik, the acting head of New York’s buildings department, said further collapses were feared following the incident on Ann Street. The cause of the collapse is not yet known.

It was only last week that the Telegraph reported experts’ warnings that multi-storey car parks across the country could be at risk of collapse as heavier electric vehicles put pressure on ageing infrastructure.

The cause of this New York collapse is of course unknown at the moment, but clearly there was an issue with the amount of weight being carried by the structure.

The extra weight of EVs will inevitably push many of these older car parks into the danger zone.
