The next Green front? Your front lawn

Never mind the advancing weeds. The war on anything fuel-powered in the name of climate obsessions continues unabated.

First, they came for your gas-powered car, says Larry Behrens @ CFACT. Then they came for the gas-powered stove.

Up next on the chopping block of the environmental left is the gas-powered lawn mower and the start of “No Mow May.”

If you haven’t heard of this phenomenon it means forgoing mowing your lawn for a month, so it takes on a more natural presence all in the name of helping bees.

Don’t get me wrong, I love those little honey generators as much as the next guy but in this case, they are being used as a proxy in the green fight. Here’s the real buzz.

For years, the extreme environmental movement has bashed the suburban badge of honor that is a green lawn. In 2016, the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) was pushing hard for the “no mow” movement saying, “Moving away from water-guzzling and chemical-hungry lawns and cultivating yards that are diverse and self-regulating is a matter of mounting urgency.”

In this case, the definition of “urgency” may be a little loose because if you take a Google-look at the NRDC’s Bozeman, Montana office you’ll find…a pristine looking lawn.

In their defense, raging hypocrisy might just be an excellent fertilizer.

It would all be truly laughable if the actions of the eco-left were limited to only their dismissive antics. Sadly, the millions spent by the NRDC and their cronies spend on politics and lobbying are big enough it would likely pay the water bill for your whole neighborhood, forever.

At the same time they want you to stop watering your lawn, they will not be turning off their own spigot of cash. You can’t really blame them as their never-ending flow of money is getting desired results.

Over 100 cities across the country have passed rules against gas powered lawn equipment.

A Heatwave in Spain

The latest garbage from the Guardian:

The record-shattering temperatures that hit the western Mediterranean last week would have been “almost impossible” without the climate crisis, according to scientists.

The heatwave across Spain, Portugal, Morocco and Algeria was made at least 100 times more likely by global heating, the researchers calculated. Before the climate crisis, such an extreme event would have been expected only once in a least 40,000 years, making it statistically impossible on human timescales.

The scientists said such heat early in the year was especially harmful to people, who were less prepared than in summer. Farmers were already suffering under a prolonged drought and the heatwave struck at an important time in the crop-growing season, particularly for wheat…..

The researchers used peer-reviewed methods to assess the influence of global heating on the 26-28 April heatwave, and the results are the fastest yet for such a study, produced in just a week. The heatwave brought temperatures never previously recorded in the four countries at that time of the year, ranging from 36.9C to 41.0C.

The team used weather data and climate models to compare the likelihood of the high temperatures in today’s warmer world with their likelihood before the climate crisis. They found that global heating had made the heatwave at least 100 times more likely, with temperatures up to 3.5C hotter than they would have been without global heating.

Heatwaves tend to be the deadliest type of extreme weather, the scientists said. Mortality data from the April heatwave is not yet available, but heatwaves in 2022 led to nearly 4,000 deaths in Spain and more than 1,000 deaths in Portugal.

According to the Guardian’s own report at the time, the new record for April set this year in Spain was only 0.2C higher than the previous record. So hardly a one in 40,000 year event then!

But what about some of the other claims?

Heatwave deaths last year, for instance, which were claimed to be 4000. The claim comes from a report by the WHO, which also states that heatwaves killed 3200 here in the UK last summer. As we know, there was no evidence for such a claim at all; excess deaths were running at a similar level all through last year regardless of season.

And for some reason the Guardian forgot to mention the recent Lancet study which showed how many more people die from cold than heat in Spain:

And what about those farmers, who are supposedly struggling because of climate change? We don’t have data for last year yet, but output of wheat hit a record high in 2021, and has been steadily increasing for decades:

Finally before the Guardian gets too apoplectic about a slightly warmer climate, they should remind their readers that Spain is only just recovering from the Little Ice Age, just as the rest of Europe is:

Maybe the Guardian would like Spain to return to the climate which brought the devastating famines of 1904-06, as first floods and then record droughts nearly brought about revolution.

Green apprenticeships celebrated in honour of the Coronation

Six green apprenticeships have been hand-picked by industry experts to mark the Coronation in recognition of their sustainability credentials, the Department for Education has announced today (4 May 2023).

In honour of His Majesty The King’s Coronation, the apprenticeships have been selected for their contribution to creating a low carbon economy by ensuring the country’s workforce is equipped with the skills needed to support the transition to net zero.

The official Coronation emblem will be used by employers and Government to promote the six apprenticeships, which include Low Carbon Heating Technician, Sustainability Business Specialist and Countryside Worker. The apprenticeships are the gold-standard for green skills training, encouraging more people to take up the opportunity to gain the skills to build an exciting career in the green industry while meeting the skills needs of employers and boosting economic growth, one of the Prime Minister’s 5 priorities.

Education Secretary Gillian Keegan said:

As we work towards our net zero goals, it has never been more important to prioritise green skills and protect our natural environment. In recognition of the critical role education and skills play in responding to climate change, these green apprenticeships have been selected in honour of His Majesty The King’s Coronation.

These gold-standard, sustainable apprenticeships offer people the chance to embark on exciting new careers in industries from forestry to construction, and contribute to creating a more sustainable economy.

The six apprenticeships are:

Countryside Worker (level 2)
Forest Craftsperson (level 3)
Low Carbon Heating Technician (level 3)
Installation Electrician and Maintenance Electrician (level 3)
Sustainability Business Specialist (level 7)
Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Practitioner (level 4)
