“far outside the range of observed variability”

Less than three months ago, NOAA published this :

“NSIDC reported that the 2024 Antarctic maximum was 77,000 square miles (200,000 square kilometers) above the 2023 record-low extent, but it was 598,000 square miles (1.55 million square kilometers) below the average maximum extent from 1981-2010. In that sense, it’s continuing a pattern that began around 2016, with most winters from 2016-2022 having below-average ice extents. In another sense, however, it’s nothing like those years; like 2023, the 2024 winter maximum was so far outside the range of observed variability that some scientists speculate that the Southern Ocean sea ice may have entered a wholly new state.”

2024 Antarctic sea ice winter maximum second lowest on record | NOAA Climate.gov

December 30 Antarctic sea ice extent has increased 36% over the past two years, and is higher than 1979, 1980, 1982, 1986, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2005, and all of the past eight years.

Pielke Jr. – How Activist Scientists And MSM ‘Gaslight’ The Public On Hurricanes

Hurricanes are often linked to climate change, but research shows no clear trend in cyclone intensity or frequency, challenging popular attribution claims. The author says ‘the attribution tricks sit out in plain sight, visible to anyone willing to have a look’. The alarmist objective is of course to make it look as if humans are boosting hurricane activity a great deal, but sound evidence is lacking, leaving mostly propaganda.

Hurricanes are the poster child of climate politics, says Roger Pielke Jr. (via Climate Change Dispatch).

As you can see in the actual poster [here], a popular narrative exists that hurricanes are caused by carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from power plants (or makes them more frequent, more intense, more wet, more slow, more fast).

Like the movie poster [here], in which the hurricane is spinning the wrong way, evidence and research have not always conformed to the narrative.

A pseudoscientific cottage industry has sprung up that associates just about every notable hurricane with climate change. Today, I take a look at recent efforts to attribute hurricanes to greenhouse gas emissions.

The impacts of climate change on hurricanes are claimed to be huge. Here are some examples from 2024:

Hurricane Milton was 40% more likely.
Hurricane Helene was more than 100% more likely.
Typhoon Shanshan was 36% more likely.
Typhoon Gaemi was about 50% more likely.
Hurricane Beryl was almost 100% more likely.

Press releases making such incredible claims flood the zone after every major storm and are uncritically repeated by the major media around the world.

Let’s take a closer look at what lies behind these press releases. Like the hurricane spinning the wrong way in Al Gore’s movie poster, the attribution tricks sit out in plain sight, visible to anyone willing to have a look.

Continued here.
