Snow Mass Recharge of the Greenland Ice Sheet Fueled by Intense Atmospheric River

A new study explains how ‘atmospheric rivers can positively impact Greenland’s [snow] mass balance’. The conclusion is that this applies ‘under certain conditions’, for example that the snow doesn’t warm up too much and turn to rain. While the focus of climate worriers and the media is usually on the sea ice, the volumes of snow falling on nearby land masses can get overlooked.

From the study: Plain Language Summary
Atmospheric rivers (ARs) are transient channels of intense water vapor that can account for up to 90% of the poleward moisture transport from mid-latitudes.

Though short-lived, these events can deliver extreme amounts of heat and rainfall that are reported to accelerate ice mass loss across the Arctic.

In this study, we explore the potential of ARs to also deliver intense snowfall and thereby replenish the mass health of the Greenland ice sheet.

To this end, we sampled firn (snow transitioning to ice) from the upper accumulation area of Southeast Greenland and, when combined with meteorological observations, found that an intense AR in mid-March 2022 delivered over 11 billion tons of snow mass to this region of the ice sheet.

We show that this immense snowfall not only recharged the snowpack and offset Greenland’s ice mass loss by 8%, but it also delayed the onset of summer melt in 2022 by 11 days.

Depending on their seasonal timing, we find that the impact of ARs on ice sheet health is more nuanced than previously thought, and under their forecast intensification they could significantly recharge Greenland’s mass balance.

Almost Unanimous Consensus Of Scientists

March 16, 1973

“Scientists say signs point to another ice age

BY DONALD C. KIRKMAN Scripps Howard Staff Writer WASHINGTON: A group of scientists say there are disturbing signs that the world’s average temperature has started to decline and that the Earth may face another catastrophic ice age in hundreds or thousands of years.

In a report soon to be released, the scientists say evidence is accumulating that the world has experienced unusually warm temperatures for the last 10,000 years and soon will revert to a colder, more hostile climate that man will find difficult to cope with.

The report is based on the findings of 46 geologists, climatologists and paleontologists who met last year at Brown University, Providence, R.I., to review recent studies of fossils, rock layers, sea sediments and biology.

Almost unanimously, these scientists agreed the world definitely will have another ice age similar to the one that ended 20,000 years ago when vast ice sheets covered large stretches of North America, Europe and Asia.

The only question, they believe is exactly when the new ice age will begin—or whether it already has begun.

“There already are signs the Earth is cooling in a cycle similar to those that heralded earlier great glaciations,” the report says. “And while it may take several centuries before any major global effects are felt and several thousand years before ice sheets reform, preliminary signs are already apparent.”

With the warm age ending, the scientists say the world logically can expect a colder, drier climate to crowd man southwards and reduce the world’s cultivatable land resources. Ice sheets once again could reach as far south as Philadelphia, Cleveland and Chicago in about 20,000 years.

“In the future, the report says, vast areas of Latin America, Africa, Asia and Australia increasingly will be affected by dryness of rainfall with its associated scourges—drought, soil erosion and starvation.”

To cope with this harsh, cooler world, man will have to call upon all his ingenuity and resourcefulness.”

Tax-Fueled Renewables

Guest Post by Willis Eschenbach

I’ve been wondering how the Europeans can possibly afford to pay for all of the public benefits as well as putting big money into all kinds of renewable schemes. Where are the megabucks for the renewables coming from?

Today I came across an interesting article entitled “The Death Of Europe” written by a Swede. In it he commented that in Sweden, “Average workers pay (a higher percentage of) taxes than you do if you make $400,000 here in the United States.”

I looked at that and said “Really?” That just didn’t seem possible.

So as is my habit, I went and got the information and to my great surprise …

… he’s right!

Makes me proud to be an American. Now we just gotta cut spending … and please, read the link above about how Europe died. Wise folks learn from the mistakes of other countries …

In any case, speaking of other countries (you like the segue?), on Tuesday I’m flying to Brisbane, Australia. One week on a farm north of there with old friends. Then on the 19th, from there to two weeks in Pacific Harbour in Fiji, lovely Fiji where I lived and worked for nine years. Hey, the waves aren’t going to surf themselves!

Then at the start of April it’s onward for a week in the Solomon Islands, where I lived and worked for eight years. Likely spend most of my time in Gizo, Western Province. Population of maybe 8,000, third largest city in the Solos … it’s a sleepy country.

And where is Gizo when it’s at home, you may ask? Here are the three stops on my bon voyage—Brisbane, Fiji, and Gizo in the Solomon Islands.

Solomons is malaria city. I had it four times. Zero stars, would not recommend. Take the preventative medicine, sleep under the net, use mosquito repellent, hope for the best …

If you’re a climate scientist in one of those areas, whether amateur or professional, gimme a shout.

Then back home again. During my peregrinations I’ll likely post sporadically on my blog, “Skating Under The Ice“. And in the meantime, leave the weapons at the door, play fair, no eye gouging, and remember:

When you comment, please quote the exact words you’re referring to.

Best to each and to all,

w.
